My wife has come into some money and has given me a grand to buy some gear.I want to set aside $200 to buy a multi input audio interface(probably an audiophile 10/10 lite). With the remaining $800, I'd like to build a new computer. This would need to include mobo/cpu/video/case/ps/ram/HD/CDR/xp home.
Any recommendations?

No real advice, but look at what the big manufacturers are asking for a decent setup.....Dell, Gateway, Hp....and then you can see if maybe buying the parts from a place like Newegg is any better deal.

Tell Mrs. Beeze I love her, and wouldn't turn down $1000...... :D

Beez,

This box...

APEVIA X-QPACK2-BK/500 (BLACK) MICRO ATX W/500W POWER SUPPLY 2x5.25" 1x3.5" 2x3.5"(hidden) W/3 SIDE SEE THROUGH WINDOWS,FRONT I/O CONNECTORS, 80mm FAN x 1 & 120mm FAN x 1CASE LIGHT OPTIONS

MS WIRELESS OPTICAL DESKTOP 3000 MULTIMEDIA COMFORT CURVE KEYBOARD & OPTICAL MOUSE USB (Dark gray)

Came in at $1K. And while it's a sweet setup, I really thought that you would get more bang for your buck with Dell...

... and I was wrong! Jeez. I can't win for losing.

I just configured a Dell Dimension 9200 with the same processor, same memory, same HDD (x2 250GB mirrored) yada yada and the bastard came in at $1,079 before tax and shipping.

Maybe Dell isn't quite the bargain I thought it was!!

Well... at least you don't have to build the Dell! Although you will be stuck with Windows Vista!

I configured the first system at www.mwave.com. The second system started with www.techbargains.com.

Luck!

The 965G has integrated video. He does not ask for a keyboard, mouse, or monitor

Pretty sweet! I don't see a lot of ATX boards with integrated video, mostly micro ATX.

Integrated video is fine, and I have a kb/mouse/monitor.

I've been running the 965G-DS3 since last fall and it is solid. Saying goodbye to IDE was very nice and it has everything: No fans, whisper quiet with the OEM cpu fan, tons of USB (10 total), 3 pci, 3 pcie 1x, 1 pcie 16x. The JMB36X controller is great, I dont use the raid but it allows hot swaping of harddrives (!) so I recommend getting some removable bays. If you have not experienced a C2D yet, then prepare for a shock

That was from Tigerdirect, but I'm looking at the site you linked to.

A couple questions regarding SATA drives. It offers three options.Ext.SATA enclosure, data cable and power cable.Presumably I would need the latter 2, but what about the first?

Depends, some drives have the normal molex 4 pin power adapter some have the small flat SATA. Easy enough to look up

You are going to need a case and power supply. Every thing you need for the SATA drive will come with the mobo.
