okay here is another mix of my black metal clip. I redid everything. How is it? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. This is my first real attempt at mixing. It was a bitch. Especially when I added the synth this time. Lemme know what ya think! I think it is at least better than my other ones.

I need to listen to this a couple more times... on first listen it sounds OK although I never heard your other mix. Perhaps either raise the level of the drums a bit or alternatively, drop the level of the guitars. Synth sounded OK...

I didn't hear the original mix either, but I'd say drop the guitars a bit and, if you can , bring up the toms a smidge.

okay i'll try that. It sounds a little muddy to me. What do you think? I tried desperately to fix it but I couldn't. Here is my first version

Yep... guitars definitely too loud there, esp. the RH guitar. I'd take em right down and then offer back into the mix. I notice there's no bass present... is that what the keys are for in the first example?

Oh, yeah, muddy... know what you mean... not enough space methinks so as suggested, try playing with lower levels on the geetars...

yeah I would like to have a bass guitar in there but I don't own one nor do I know anyone who will lend me one :(. So what do you think I should do to help the muddiness?

When are we going to get to hear a song with some killer Black Metal vocals?

haha pretty soon. I'm taking it one step at a time. BTW what did you think of the mixing job compared to the last one I posted?

I personally like th mix. I have a good idea of what music your goig for and thnk your off to a great start. Keep us posted...

Honestly, before you can actually start to mix, you should learn how to make good tracking and get good sounding instruments to start with..

With the mixes you posted, the sounds (guitars and drums) are awful.
I think you should learn to get a good distorted guitar sound, then tweak your drum sampler to get a better tone. Then rent a bass or buy a $50 bass (any bass is better than no bass).

But seriously, I don't know what you used to get this guitar tone, but I wouldn't buy this thing....my ears are still bleeding..all fuzz, no body, no mids, no warmth..

Oh I fully agree with getting a good tracking tone. The guitars I agree on a little bit, the drums I think sound fine though. What's wrong with them?

Maybe it's just the "cover up" caused by the guitars, but what I heard was the following:

Snare sounds electronic and drown with bad reverb
Bass drum lacks punch and definition
Hi-Hat sounds really electronic and has low resolution
Cymbals sound really washy (might be cause of the mp3...)

For sure, bring the drums up a bit and change this guitar tone please, it's simply horrible. You need a good class in getting some heavy guitar tone.

haha. Well maybe you just don't like the whole black metal sound to begin with. Have you listened to it ever? I do agree the guitars need work on though. As far as the drums, I like the snare sound but I do think the kick drum and the ride need a little work. The thing with teh guitar tone is wasn't like that when I first recorded them. When I added the synth though, it completly downed the guitars out. It was taking up like the same frequencies as the guitars. It made it a real bitch to get the guitars heard. So I had to try and get them to to separate a little. Oh and I have tweaked that mix a little. I'll have to post an updated file soon. But the problem is stupid cubase LE only lets me mixdown 20 mp3 files then I have to buy a plug in to get unlimited mp3's. So I really don't wanna post it untill I tweak it some more. I am working on the guitar sound more. Any advice as to how to get the guitars and synth work together and not just clash with each other?

Black metal? Maybe not "black" but I listen to a lot of european metal like Helloween, Hammerfall, Sinergy, Children of Boddom, Stratovarius, Primal Fear, etc...
As far as I know...listening to Testament, Slayer and other legends, guitar tones have always had LOTS of mids.

yeah when I recorded the guitars they did have a bit of mids. Then I had to cut a lot of em out because the synth was taking up that space and just making the guitars not be heard.

A quick trick for this...is record what you have the least control over FIRST. In your case, the synth. Then shape the guitars around to have more meat.
Also, when I'm talking about mids, I'm talking about LOW mids..not high mids...it's important to make a distinction here. Pumping the high mids will get harsh and pop the eardrums out.

yeah. You know what I was actually thinking that same thing. Record the synth first, then guitars. Thanks man. You're a big help.

Why don't you just export to WAV and use either Windows Media Player or Musicmatch to convert to 320kbps MP3's?

I'd be interested in getting the individual tracks of this so I could have a play myself... what's the chance?

yeah I tried using a converter on teh wav files but it woouldnt let me load em in! It lets me do it with the mp3 files though. I just can't do the opposite. I think its a blocker or something cubase put on it. Cause other wav files work just none of the ones I made in cubase LE.

Fuck Cubase...
Now tell me this ain't a reason to download pirate software...
Bad engineering like this make me puke. Goddamn shit, you payed for the damn thing...it must not block you !
