Good news, yesterday I found a used Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket for 400 dollars Canadian, played it, put it on hold and went back today to buy it. It now has a lovely home in my bedroom. I can now sell my crate, which won't get me much, but still not worth keeping.
So in the span of two monthes I've gone from an Ibanez Noodles Signature into a Crate amp, to a Gibson SG Standard into a Mesa amp.

Sounds like the quality of your tone increased by about a factor of 10.

Congrats!!!

I honestly dont think I could possibly be happier about my sound ever! I just played the thing a lot louder than I had before and it's beautiful, however it is incredibly loud, I haven't come close to cranking it yet, I have a feeling I should get earplugs before I do.

Hehe... yeah it's great getting a *nice* amp-- even better with a matching *nice* guitar.

The loudness vs. tone thing is very common with tube amps. What most people like (whether they know it or not) about tube amps is the tube distortion. But, to get that sweet distortion, you usually have to get the tubes really cooking-- which of course means more volume.

I remember my first tube amp many years ago. I didn't know jack about them... I had just always heard the tube amps were "better." I still remember thinking "this sounds like ass at low volumes." So I rarely played it at low volumes.

Yeah, ear plugs are a good idea. I use these ER20 Universal ear plugs made by Westone. They sound pretty good (much better than those crappy foam plugs) and my ears don't ring after band rehearsal like they used to.

Also, an attenuator like the THD Hot Plate-- while not perfect tone-wise-- helps reduce the volume while still getting sweet tube distortion from your amp. They are a little pricey though.

Now get off the freaking computer and go jam until your fingers bleed!

Cheers!

It actually has a headphone jack, but its kind of strange, when I plug in headphones sound still comes out of the speaker on the amp, then theres a switch to mute the speaker, so I switch that when I use the headphones, then I can crank it and it isn't that loud out of the headphones, but once I get to a certain volume with the speaker mute on and the headphones plugged in sound comes out of the speaker again. What is happening with that? is it supposed to do this?

does anyone know how I could figure out what year this amp was made?

I saw your link and thought "SWEET! A Mesa forum."

After reading through most of the posts in the "Rack" section (I have a TriAxis and a Quad), I happened upon a post where I guy mentions using both a Quad and a TriAxis at the same time. As I thought to myself, "This guy must be cool, he's got the same rig I do," I looked at his username to find out who he was...

It was me. :D

how do you know?
Just do

Also the send level strength for your headphones is determined by the Gain and Master controls

but why is it that if the speaker mute is on, which is supposed to stop the signal from getting to the speaker at all, when I turn the master volume to a certain point it starts coming out the speaker again?

As long as the mute is on you can unplug the speaker. Solves that. Not the answer you may have wanted. But it solves the problem. It's IMPORTANT to make sure you connect the speaker again before you switch back to on. You will damage it otherwise.
