Sir Cool of Coronado
just got back from the NAMM show..seems the folks at alesis have a new hard disk recorder, at a shocking price. but given their track record for announcing new products and actually having them ready, we may not see it for a while.

well, to tell the truth, there wasn't that much buzz about it at NAMM..and I wasn't really interested in it either. I did go by and check it out. it apperard to be working, but from what I recall, they did not have anything hookd up to it. so we couldn't hear it.

It's got me interested! Prob'ly 'bout $4500.00.

Don't buy a HDR now

From what I've read, the HD24 is going to be the HDR to get. It is supposed to be released in May. Alesis has developed a new way to write music to an IDE drive, and even a slow one at that. There are still unanswered questions. Will the Masterlink be replaced with this new system? Will we be able to insert the removable HD into our computers - I doubt that. Anyway, $3600-$4000 is the going price for this level recorder. At $2000, I would wait before I bought a HDR.

The specs look nice, +4 inputs, 24bit/96khz, good stuff maynard! You could buy 3 used adat for 2 grand or one of these. I think It's the medium of the future!

It wouldn't. One is a multi tracker and the MasterLink is for...well...mastering. I do believe I'm going to pick up one of these jewels. I was reading that they developed this unit a while back and was waiting for the price of the hard drives to drop to the same price as tape (around $90).

engineear,
Masterlink is a unique 24bit/96K HD Mastering tool that burns Red book 44.1/ and or 24bit/96K CD's. My question is, will Alesis use their new IDE writing system in a new version of Masterlink. I plan to get both of them as an unbeatable pair. I just bought a Fostex D824 - at least it's ADAT.

Gotcha!! Like TR stated 1 is multi the other mixdown. Now i c where u were headed. Have the Masterlink. Hope the the HD24 is as good. Love the LINK. Has anyone heard about the HD24's capabilities of computer interfacing along the lines of the Mackie??? Propriortary can be limiting. Could Alesis have it ALL together this time and allow us to get to/from our computer AND our various editing softwares? Any and all feedback very appreciated. Let's keep this thread going - could be very informative to all of us interested in this product. Thanx.

Thinking further...... don't think the newer version of writing to HD would benefit the Masterlink. Software update to multi band compression, keyboard interface etc. would help the Link. The reason for the HD24 unique writing to HD..... to be able to use slower less expensive hot swappable HD with ample throughputs discouraging any dropouts, clicks, pops etc. for the HD24's EIGHT tracks of simultaneous recording - I believe. Streaming audio not just data bursts, yielding smooth clean effortless audio recording to HD.... oh please oh please oh please!! I hope Alesis gives us ample pathways to intergrate to existing computer based/ADAT systems.

looks like it will be easily itergrated into an existing adat system..but if you want to move your harddrive to a computer? your probably out of luck. This box probably uses the same crappy converters as the adat's as well, we'll have to see what it actually does when it comes out.

HDR >PC

Fostex has already started the PC connection. The D2424 sends 24 channels to and from the PC through their included RME Hammerfall card. RME is basing their designs on the ever growing power of the PC. They also make a converter that does ADAT and TDIF at 96K. When I get rich selling some of my art work, I want to get one.
