Hello fellow creators of vibrations and melodies. I'm a bigtime newbie and i use acid 5, FL5 and native instruments absynth 3. Now sometimes friends send me little songs they have done on guitar and i want to add stuff to them, such as sequenced drums and synth melodies. But obviously since they made the song first ( lets just say its acoustic with vocals) they made it at their own unknown tempo. How can i figure out a way to get the right tempo for the other guys song so i can toss in some drums and other stuff? I've been trying to figure this out for months. I have opened the song up in Acid with beatmapper and it will tell me the BPM the song is running out, lets say 114 beats per minute. I'll also slice the song so the song starts right when the first sound is heard, like the guitar. I'll go into FL studio and export a drum loop at 114 BPM and it still doesn't work out...very confused.

If someone is recording something with no click or rhythm track at all the timing is not going to be consistent. ;) Is this not what you're saying?

The solution would be to work with stuff that was recorded with strict timing from the start.

Chances are, they didnt play with a metronome at all. In that case, tell them to rerecord it to a click.

If they did, simply ask them for the tempo setting, hopefully they remember it..

Yep, ask your friend for the BPM. Alternatively, If you were to 'remix' your friends song, you could sample the verse, chorus etc and use a program like Recycle to find the BPM. Just sample part of the main audio...say...2 bars and then tell Recycle it's a 2 bar loop you are using and - HEY PRESTO! - it tells you the original BPM.

Sampling the tune would probably sort out your friend's timing issues if it wasn't recorded to a click track, and you would be able to thow in some midi drums or loops etc.

Might be a long road for a short cut, though.

why dont ya try cross-posting on every forum..i think ya missed a spot!

alright

Ok fully understood now, I also want to experiment with that recycle software , thanks mates. And sorry for posting on a couple different sections,,, I wasn't fully sure tempo topics belonged in certain area's...I'll keep that in mind now.
