Any thoughts on this?

Are two channels of preamp more valuable than a single channel with a rockin EQ?

Thanks.

It depends 100% on what you intend to use it for.

If you need two channels of preamps, then one channel with eq is not going to be as valuable. If you need one channel with eq, then having two channels without eq will not be as valuable to you.

Ultimately it's not a question of "value" but of buying the gear that suits your needs.

If you mean price-wise then it really depends on how good the EQ is in the 5032. I have not heard any reports so far. The 5012 has already gone from $1450 to $1799 I believe, though it's been awhile since I checked the price. It has also earned a very strong reputation slightly more versatile than even the Great River sound-wise.

If the EQ turns out to be extremely musical sounding, then I would say you might have a product that tips the scale on the 1073 or 1084 vintage models and this would be highly valued. If the EQ is just OK, then some people might opt for two channels and EQ elsewhere.

If you mean which is better or more useful, I would say if the EQ in the 5032 comes 80% close to the EQ in the 1073 or 1084, then it would be a must have for a primary vocal channel. I have the 5012 and it is extremely handy for stereo pairs and sources that require dual mics like simultaneous acoustic guitar and vocals. But I do long for EQ that is in the 1073 or 1084 category of sound.

Just my opinion here but along these lines, I am anxiously waiting for Rupert’s DI and compressor.

Personally, it's the EQ on all the old 1073's and 1084's etc... that really make them valuable. In my opinion the old Neve EQ is much more valuable to me than just the preamp part of the channel strip. But, if you need two channels, you need two channels. My decision would also be based around how the new EQ sounds. I know hough that the Chandler LTD-2 has gotten some pretty strong supporters for both it's preamp and EQ. Not too expensive either for a full Neve style channel strip.

I would totally agree.
I find that keeping the pre output low and then pushing the eq output hard gives more of that neve character.

As far as your question about the eq or not.
I couldnt help. i wouldnt buy a pre with eq if i could get TWO pre's for the same price. :D

(EDIT) heres a link to a user review of the 5032's eq section.

Thanks for that review.

From the words in that review my take away is that it's a good utility EQ but I did not get the impression he was knocked over with the sound except on electric guitars and snare.

I would like to hear some other opinions and amazed adjectives before I strike. The proposed dedicated EQ box is of more interest to me.

If You Need The Eq Then Get The Pre+eq... If You Need 2 Pres, Then Get Teh 5012.. Is Not A Hard Desition, Just Make Up Your Mind...

I am going to guess that he did make up his mind.... about 2 years ago....

You know that guy is sitting there scratching his head wondering what you're talking about. If his brain explodes, it's YOUR fault.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the grave yet again....but I don't care - I want to know if you capitalized the first letter of every single word in your post for a specific reason, or if that's just how you have always written everything...or what?

I know this is a lame post...and I don't ever pick on people who can't spell or make use of proper grammar... I'm just curious, damnit!
