Has anyone used one of these? (Neve 1272 pre amps)

I have seen "refurbished" units around $1g and less, and wonder if they are an "elite" class A pre. (can't convince my wife to let me buy a $2-3G pre! - dang...)

I want to get some really nice "world class" pres to warm up my sound before hitting the HD, & I am trying to get my sound to a new level. Mostly because I plan on doing some commercial work this next year, and need some great pre's, and the name "Neve" alone usually invokes respect among the audio world.

What console did they come from?

Thanks for your help,
Sponge Bob

As I understand the Neve line, the 1272 is a line amp with a mod to turn it into a mic-pre. It's not the classic Neve sound. For that, you'd be looking at a 1081 or 1073.

Hope this helps.

1073's ROCK! Oh I don't even want to think about it, it hurts...

Wasn't the 1272 the talkback mic amp out of a larger console?

So is there a true classic neve pre in the $1g-2G range that would provide world class sound?

I need something that will be different/better than my console (A Soundtracs- pretty decent though) that I can "boast" about like a wanna be gear snob...... cuz who really wants to be a snob, I just want gear ;)

I saw some at www.brentaverill.com, but I don't know what the heck they really came out of, ie console strip or some stinkin' talk back mic.

thanks

brent sells vintage neve pres that are reracked and they cost a fortune when he actually has some in stock.
Your never gonna find the classic Neve sound in something other than a Neve. However you can get very good recreations of the neve in the recent crop of neve clones such as the great river mercenary edition. That would be your best bet from what I've heard. Vintech makes the 1272 clone and I've heard some favorable comments and some unfavorable comments on it. The 1272 seems to be the poor mans 1073 but does a good job nonetheless.

Anyhow, my vote goes for the Great River mp-nv Mercenary Edition. It will give you a great neve 1073 sound but without the mush that comes with many multiple tracks of the classic 1073.

and its in your budget;)

wanna hear the neve 1073 sound in action? Listen to Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Their console actually had neve 1084s. These were essentially 1073s but with the addition of a low pass filter and switchable top end frequencies.

The 1272's do indeed have that vanilla Neve sound, to an extent, and sound GREAT on guitars and drums, a little weid on some vocals.

other options

How about brent averill's reracked 3405/3415? They're cheaper so I'd assume they're not as good as the 1272, but I figured I might as well ask about them. Also, on the website it says that he racks single api pres (no specific model, yet powered so no need of lunchox) for $899. Does anyone know what specific pre that is, or if it is as good/better than the 1272?

Eric

P.S. - Yet another question - he also racks Audix 35102s for $930 (w/ power supply). Same questions as above - how good, etc. Basically if you didn't notice I mentioned everything on the website that is under $1000.
