Hello Everyone

I have been wondering about this mike for a while as
someone is offering one for sale in my area. I am told it is very
similar/better than a Neumann U87.. Do you feel that to be true?

I thank you for your help.

First of all, I think you mean the UM-70s, not UM-705.

If that is the case, it is made by Microtech Gefell, not Neumann. They have not been the same company for over 50 years.

They are similar in features (3 patterns, pad, roll-off), but look quite a bit different. The UM70s has a very thin body, with a larger head, while the U87 is more cylindrical.

The UM-70s has it's own sound - with a fairly strong upper mid-range presence peak. It is very similar in sound to the Gefell UMT800 (they both use the same M7 capsule), without as many polar patterns and in a smaller package. I like it on Acoustic Bass, or other sources which can use a little extra high frequency articulation. Because of it's smaller footprint, it's also a little easier to squeeze into tight spaces. I rarely use it on vocals, because I'm not a fan of too much high end hype on most voices.

If you are looking for a U87 sound, I don't think the UM70s is really all that similar. On the other hand, you can probably get one a little cheaper than a U87.

The Gefell UM705 is the predecessor, of sorts, of the Gefell UMT800. I haven't heard one, but I do own a UMT800. Great mic. I have a pair of PM750, which are from the same era as the UM705 (mid '70s to early '80s). The stand well against their successor the M294 (or M295).

So you are saying there actually is a UM705?

I apologize in that case. I thought he just got confused and meant the UM70s. I don't know anything about the 705. You learn something new every day! :o

Gefells are my thing, good to see them being discussed! Yes, like sodelsolray was saying, it is very similar , sonically to the umt800. I have heard and used them, and did note that the um705 is a bit more noisy, and with less of a high end extension than the umt800. You cant go wrong with anything Gefell though..so if you have the chance, JUMP! Gefell=best mic company in the world.
The character is on the clean/clear side..very nice..
Teddy
