This is probably a stupid question, but is it worth the extra hundred bucks for the neumann?

Is it really only one hundred dollars difference now? It used to be more like $300 ($800 vs. $500).

First of all, you didn't say what you were using it for. The TLM 103 has a much hotter output, but no bass roll-off or pad. That might make the KSM32 a better choice if you were recording loud or bass-heavy sources. Especially if you don't have a preamp with a lot of headroom. Also how important is the shock mount to you? (the Shure comes with one)

Secondly, have you auditioned the KSM27? Many people have expressed a preference for it over the 32, and it is even cheaper (and a true large diaphragm, besides).

I own both (103 and 32), and find them useful in different applications.

Would you be so kind as to list which applications you use with which mics?
Grateful...

Well, its actually a 150 dollar price difference, because I'm getting the Neumann for 643 and the shure for 491. I think Im gonna buy the shure now, and buy the neumann later in a few months.

I didn't realize the neumann didnt come with a shockmount. Which costs like 110, so that does put me back a little.

Sure, Dan...

I tend to be using the TLM 103 for:

•Acoustic bass
•Room mic for drums
•One vocal mic (in a multiple vocal situation where I need more than my two tube mics).

I tend to use the Shure KSM32 on:
•Rack Tom
•2nd or 3rd option on Trumpet and Trombone
•Bottom Snare mic (one option, if I am using a bottom snare mic at all)

If you're going to be using this as your primary mic, then definitely get the Neumann. Many people wil agree, this is agreat all around mic.

You will never regret getting the shure. Good all round mic And built well.

Good deals on the TLM 103 nowadays too! Get the "monolith" from MusiciansFriend.

I have enough pro headphones. Now if they'd throw in a shockmount...
