I need to upgrade my computer. My brother built it for me 2 yrs ago. I run:
Windows 98se
Vegas Audio(latest version)
Wavelab 3.0
Waves and Sonic Foundry plugins for fx

Hardware:
Delta 1010
Pentium 3(500mghz)
256 megs of Ram
30 gig 7200 ide

Recording is fine, but when it comes time to mix and ad plugins my system boggs and my playback stutters. I'm wondering if getting a 1000 mghz proccessor will solve this. What else could I do to help? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

more ram. i got 512 (used to have 256)...huge difference when it comes to plugins...i cant put a ton of shit on, and still have it run great.

Thanks for the reply. I thought about that and I was gonna get more ram, but my ram meter in Vegas doesn't seem to be overworked. It's usually my disk meter that goes in the red.

I will get more ram though, it is on my list of things to do.

You have plenty of RAM unless you are loading massive soundfonts/modules/sample sets into memory. Adding RAM above what you actually require might feel kind of good, but it doesn't do squat. For every version of Windows currently available, 256MB is more than adequate for doing typical audio recording (including DX and VST effects).

Your processor is holding you back. It's not even a coppermine PIII...probably performs only slightly better than a 450Mhz PII. Your motherboard will limit your options, so make sure you know what it can handle.

In the meantime, make sure you have your buffers set high enough in your soundcard's control panel and/or software. Lots of people overlook their buffer settings and assume that something is wrong with their machine.
