I have a question:

If you need to record 16 or more CHANNELS/Tracks ** AT ONCE** (i.e., a live band).

How do you get them into the PC?

Everything I'm seeing is 8 audio inputs.
I was going to try to get a pair of the Tascam PCI-822 cards (TDIF) so that I could go through my DA-38's, but Tascam says that two of these cards will not work together in a PC.

So, there goes that Idea....that looked like the best option for me.
I don't have ADATS, and I stay the hell away from anything that says "Alesis" on it....I've had too many bad experiences with their gear for me to trust the name with my money.(Especially since they went bankrupt).

So, any of you who are recording on the PC and recording 16 channels or more at one time, what are you using?

Protools would be my first option, but I'm trying to get into this for right around $1,000, not $10,000.:D:D:D

The TASCAM TDIF cards would have allowed me to get into the PC for $600, and I intended to either purchase Sound Forge or something along that line for around $400 or $500 bucks.

So what are my other options?

All I hear is that you can't put 2 or more of these 8-Input card/breakout box combo's together.

So, anybody got any suggestions?

i would suggest one PCI-822 card and transfer them 8 tracks at a time from the DA-38's to the computer......is T/DIF the only kind of outputs the DA-38 has?.....

of course for not much more than the $1000 you can go with 2 Delta 1010's, moving up to 24bit/96khz converters......

or you can go with 2 Digi001's for $1600 (of course youll be selling the Tascams).....then youre talking Pro Tools......

MOTU 2408 can take in 24 channels of your TDIF at a time. You work with 3 banks of data. You can do any combo, 8 analog/8 adat/8 TDIF, anything. And their converters on the MKII are 24/96. I find their control panel software a bit odd and cumbersome, but that will definitely let you use your DA38s as well as the onboard converters at the same time.

Gidge,

I like the way you think!:D:D

I have thought about selling these....but I do like to be able to have the material on Tape for a hard copy backup.

I thought that the Digi001's were simply 2 channels....so, perhaps I will take the "ProTools Plunge" after all...and I can't believe I am even posting that statement (If you guys only knew how anti-Digital I was prior to making the jump with the Tascam machines.....Hell, I didn't even own a CD or CD player until the late 90's! It was Cassettes!! Cassettes I tell ya!

Someone had E-mailed me and suggested MOTU's 2408 mk.III, which I thought was Mac use only.....so, I'm getting quite an education on soundcards.

I 'm going to have to look into the Delta 1010's as well, because if a pair of those work....I could get into this for not too much more than I had planned....of course, with the digi001's, I could get into a full fledged ProTools setup for around the same price.

So, I'm going to have to do some serious "Thinnin" around here.

Thanks,
Tim

The Aardvark Q10 allows I believe up to 4 units in the same computer.

The Layla by Echo now has an Expansion unit called the Layla EXP that doesn't require additional PCI cards.

Those would be the 2 best bets.

2 motu 896's
2 motu 2408MKIII
2 delta 1010's(will blue screen under XP)

the 896's would give the the best quality of the 3 cards...
i think the new cport to.. the cport 3000... check them out..

Tim,
Regarding the Digi 001 you have eight in on analogue ( 2 with pres) plus the eight in on ADAT avaliable simultaneously. Get a Focusrite Octopre with ADAT out for the ADAT ins on the Digi and u have a cool 16 input system.

BTW a mate of mine uses 001 and octopre or Digimax pres are on the shopping list soon.

Cheers

The C-Port supports up to 4 breakout boxes (8 ins each) stacked together in an array. It's probably one of your least expensive options, but no lightpipe.
