ok i just did a fresh install of win xp home edition after hours of searching for my product key and then a half hour on the phone with a machine trying to get my registration number, apparently if you uninstall win xp and then try to re install your registration number wont work anymore.
Welcome to Microsoft.

XP does a hash calculation of installed hardware as part of the serial number registration process. When the hardware changes, XP refuses to register because it thinks it is duplicated on another machine. You can get around this, but a call to MS is mandatory and you have to grovel with a human on the other end. It is perfectly legal to move the OS from one machine to another, but you have to get permission from Big Brother to do so.

The solution is to build your system in stages, and create GHOST images along the way. This lets you roll back to a previous system in the event you broke something during the installation process. It beats the shit out of reinstalling from scratch.

Once your machine is installed to your liking, make a final GHOST image of the system partition. Windows *always* gets trashed, so restore a known good system from the image, instead of doing a tedious rebuild again.

bgavin, I think the 98SE limit on RAM is 512. Same principal, though.

I've been digging around trying to substantiate the 64mb application limit, but not having any luck finding it. Since it is not in Tech Net, nor in the Knowledgebase, I have to be in error.

Win98 does have a 512mb installed limit without tweaking the VCache registry setting. There are a few Microsoft TIDs about ram sized higher than 512mb, and all look to be more trouble then they are worth.
