I have a quick question. I ordered my computer with no sound card inside,
because I want to get a professional audio card with a breakout box for recording to hard disk and cd-r. My main concern is whether this digital interface will also function the way a normal sound card does: icon alarms, the playing of a CD, hearing boot-up and shut-down sounds, hearing MP3sand
sound on MPEGs, etc. I'm sure you have the answer. I appreciate your time. I hope I haven't made a mistake by not ordering a sound card.

If the soundcard uses normal windows wave drivers (and all pc soundcards do), then yes, you'll hear all the little bleeps and blurps.

However: windows' sound effects are recorded at 32khz, while most audio recording is done at 44.1 or 48 khz. Without going into details, this can cause problems with the soundcard not knowing which sample rate to use (consequences vary from no sound at all, to only the first sound being played, to having both sounds resampled to allow the soundcard to play it (rare)).

Bottom line: to avoid any possible sample rate problems while recording, disable sound effects in the windows control panel, at least, all of them except start up and shut down sounds.

Hope this is useful
