Hello HR.com

I haven't been around much. Life is hectic, planning a wedding (June 15th, my nerves my nerves my nerves) and things picking up in the north with the day job, doesn't leave much time for working on all this good stuff.

Anyhoo,

Here is a song i recorded for with my brother and his childhood friend while he was in town for a few days. It is an acoustic version of Lagwagon/Joey Cape's tune "To all my friends" ( I appear on guitars and some back ups and "cheersing" ) There was no real practice of anykind it was just sit in my room and push through it and one other song i am currently editing.

We went through a lot of beer those nights.

This is my first real attempt at trying to capture acoustic instruments :guitar: and vocals in my room. Which, i should have thought out a little better. You can really hear the room in some spots. C'est la Vie.

There is a huge list of things i don't love about it and some guitar parts may need some fixing. Noteably post mixing i could really hear Reapers metronome coming through the earphones into the mix. Huge bummer, so some of my edits might be really in your face and crappy.

Cool. Rip it apart gang. Appreciated. :thumbs up:

P.S. I am sure there are spots that may warrant an opinion of pitch correction or auto-tune. You can share it, but i won't act on it. I am in love with human imperfection. Thanks in advance.

The flanking guitars are too loud, and you might want to put a low shelf EQ on them as well. The thing that jumps out at me is the difference between the sound of the mandolin and the vocal - it sounds like they were recorded in completely different spaces. I think I'd put a verb of some sort on the vocal, and then put another very subtle verb on the whole mix to try to make everything sound more glued together.

Dobro. What do you mean by flanking guitars? I only have the rhythm guitars and one little solo track.

I do have two different reverbs that may be conflicting? I have some reverb on the vocals and a different one on the mandolin. Could that be the problem. I was trying to give the mando it's own space? Maybe i shouldn't have approached it like that?

I also have no reverb on the entire mix at all. I'll try and add a little bit. Thanks Again.

Just going to bump this up and keep it up there.

Anyone else?

Nah, bring the middle mandolin thing down. It's way too out front and it's crowding out the vocals.

Great cover of a cover guy!!! I love it! I can also appreciate the clinking sociables at the end. I get that reference where most people won't get it, so it seems wasted. I am familiar with the Cape/Snodgrass version. I was singing along and lol'd a little. Imgaine my suprise when it got to that part.

Clever Boys. Very Clever.

Mix wise the mandolin is too loud. Buddy has some chops, but bring it down a bit it'll still be good. I would probably turn the guitars down a little bit as well, maybe throw in a little more low end beef as well as you guys didn't throw any Acoustic bass into your version.

I wouldn't even worry if it sounds like the mandolin and vocals were done in the same room, 98% of the people when they hear this aren't going to A: Give a shit, B: Notice i wouldn't waste time on that.

I like that you guys went a different direction with the vocals and didn't do full on carbon copy cover.

Kudos. What parts were yours.

And also you really suck and responding to PM's.

@dobro: I am going to look into the effects i have on some stuff. I am thinking i don't need to have a reverb and stuff on each individual track. i am going to go back to the drawing board and try and group them to the same send. Maybe thats my issue? I have different reverbs and delays on the mando than i do on the vocals?

@Greg: I concur! I referenced in my vehicle and few other sources. The Mandolin is kind of over the top loud. Not a god Balance. As i said i am going back to the drawing board on this so it'll come down for sure.

@Atom Bomb: Thanks. Didn't think anyone on here would be familiar with either. Glad you liked. I did the guitar on the left and low back ups. Sorry about the PM's But i think we have had that conversation once already. I am in Alberta also. In GP.

Thanks again guys.

Here is an updated mix of the song.

I changed some of the overall compression and took some of the harshness away. Might have been to much of the upper freq's???

Also rerouted alot of my sends. I don't think i was using reverbs and stuff like that properly.

Thanks again.
