What's the recommended interface between a real mic'ed drum kit and Sonar Producer 4? Can channels from an outboard analog/digital mixer be linked to Sonar's internal digital mixer?

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

DY

You need some kind of interface or soundcard to do that. I believe the motu 896 comes with 8 inputs. What you would want to do is take your outboard gear hook it into the Motu 896 or whatever interface works for you and plug your mics into the outboard gear. So goes like this take a nice preamp hook it into the Motu via line in, adat, spdif, or whatever works for you, then take your interface and hook it into your pc/mac via firewire. I have the digidesign 002r interface for pro tools, it has 16 inputs i think. Adat lightpipe which allows 8 channels thru via lightpipe, 4 mic pres, and 4 line inputs which is what i hook my good outboard pres to. Remember Mic into Outboard Pre into Motu/interface into pc/mac. Sonar will recognize the inputs of the interface you choose. Hope that wasn't too confusing.

Nope - not at all...and thanks!

I've been using my soundcraft 200b and mixing down to a 2 track reel to reel and then into my PC, but I want 8 track mixing control of the drums in the PC. So my Audigy ZS2 has to go buhbye, huh? I was hoping that I could use my soundcard and go USB...hmmm....*still thinking*...

Thanks again,

DY

Yeah get rid of that soundcard its really not good at all for recording. You could just get a soundcard that has lightpipe(remember lightpipe ADAT= 8 channels) and get something like the behringer ada8000 its cheap and works. The pre's in it are a bit tinny but its acceptable. Presonus and M-Audio and others make 8 channel lightpipe pres as well, the octane and the digimax lt they run a bit pricey though. with that you should have like 10 12 total inputs for like 600-700 dollars and sonar won't have a problem recognizing the inputs. By the way how are you liking sonar.

Sorry have to add a little on here, you may be able to use the soundcard and hook an interface up to it however I would seriously avoid USB for transfering data from the interface to the pc. USB can't handle nearly what firewire can and with you wanting to do 8 tracks I'd be afraid you'll run into errors and other problems. Hopefully a pc guy will get on here and help you out more, like I said I'm a mac guy everything is easy with macs just plug and play.

Sorry I keep adding stuff here, I noticed this is posted in the drum section and that fine and all but you may be missing some really good help by not posting this in the computer section just scroll further down the main page you'll see it, post your soundcard question in there you'll get much more help.

I have a Tascam TM-d1000 mixer that I mic my kit up with 7 mic's, and run each channel into Logic via an ADAT/Edit interface. It's been solid for years and inexpensive too.
