Guinea Pig
Hi people,

Basically i have been using Cubase for the past...4 years? and i have to say i used to think the program was amazing and swore by it, but lately i feel it has just been more hardwork than ever! I have Cubase SX and it seems to just constantly mess up, needs setting up all the time, just constant work on it! Ive heard alot of good things about Logic and am highly considering moving to that. Obviously this would be a big decision, and i want to know some peoples views before i go out and spend £1000 on new software and buy some hardware.

Thanks,

Peace

I've been using SX and SX 2 for years... I have no idea what you mean by "needs setting-up..." I found it perfectly stable and consistent in interface and operation.

If you're constantly having to "setup", then this points to an issue with your computer configuration and not specific s/w....

I use Cubase SE and have never had any problems with the software whatsoever.

As for problems caused by me being stupid? well that's something else entirely. :D

A friend used Logic back in the PC days and I found it pretty difficult to use compared with Cubase. That was before I started using Cubase as well so it's not just a case of preferring what I'm familiar with.

Interesting. I have SX 3 and used SX 2 before that - haven't had either constantly mess up or having to keep setting it up all the time. I'd suspect the user or computer config as opposed to the software itself. Once you get things initially setup in Cubase, you should be on your way.

What version are you using? What are you running it on? What hardware are you using? There are a few variables to factor in regarding any problems you might be having.

I've been running Cubase SL for a year now with absolutely no issues at all.

Since you mentioned Logic, are you by chance running a Mac? I have heard about issues with Cubase on the Mac, but I run a PC so it could be a platform thing.

If you are on a Mac and seriously considering a switch I would strongly recommend you also check out Digital Performer (which will cost you less than either Cubase SX or Logic, I believe). I helped a friend setup his Mac-based studio and from recommendations from both here at HR.com as well as other sites I recommended he get DP. It is a fantastic package that I would jump to in a heartbeat if I used a Mac.

Anyway, good luck figuring out what the issue is. Hopefully you can get it resolved.

Darryl.....

I don't run Cubase, but rather its big sister Nuendo, but setting up has never been a problem. All that's required is to create templates for the different types of setups you need, then choose the one you want. All the VSTs, tracks, etc. will be loaded just the way you like it.

I used to be a Sonar fiend, but Nuendo changed my life -- and I'm sure Cubase is much the same for others here. The thought of anyone abandoning Cubase is amazing to me... :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies! The setting up issue was basically referring to being a MASSIVE problem at the start, needed loads of attention and work on it, everything stays in order apart from MIDI which i need to sort out.

Replies to the above quote:

I use Cubase SE and am running it on Mac OSX. Im using a Delta 1010LT sound card running via a Mackie 1604VLZ desk and using M Audio BX5 Monitors.

The overall set up is decent and it shouldnt behave like this, i start University in September and alot of computers there are using Logic so i might just switch, keep Cubase and use it as a "Back up" whenever needed...

I would take a good look at that computer, Cubase is a very stable application!

I've been a longtime Logic user, and have always preferred it to Cubase. But after getting SX2 for X-mas this year I have only fired up Logic to transfer unfinished songs into SX (Fortunately SX lets me emulate a good portion of Logics workflow, which I do still prefer). It is ROCK SOLID, even when working on several projects simultaneously. Logic wasn't nearly as stable, but I can't speak for the "New Logic" as I didn't follow there move to the Mac, but I have heard mixed feelings about it since.

The Computer is a Mac G5, Dual 1.8Ghz with 1.5Gb RAM. Ive heard alot of stories regarding gremlins with G5 computers and Cubase, i have asked many technicians this in the past few days, and they've all confirmed it, so there you go, thats the answer. Cant explain what the gremlins do fully, but Cubase just doesnt seem to work properly with a G5.

Any other people with G5's who use Cubase?

Look forward to hearing from you..

I don't use a mac but I hear you shouldn't mess with gremlins, they're bad news. Maybe it's time to get out of Dodge.

Yeah i know, thats the reason Cubase have updated so many times (SX > SX2 > SX3) in a short space of time. Many people were finding gremlins and so Cubase fixed them and brought out the newer version.

Ill have a think of going to Pro Tools, i certainly need to do something, and its either selling my G5 and getting a G4 or just getting rid of Cubase and buying another programme...

Cheers for the replies guys

Peace

I use Cubase SE on a 1.8 G5 with a Delta 1010lt card and the only problems I have are usually in the setup interaction between Cubase, The 1010 card and OSX which are all resolved with experience and the manuals. All work very well and are extremely stable.
