Can someone please (Ghost ;) ) take a look at the picts enclose below ? There are 2 silver type screws (?) just at the bottom of the tape compartment. I assume there's a tool to unscrew these and gain access to the heads and pinch roller ? Which tool do I use ?

Also, when I gain entry, how do I remove the pinch roller ?

Thanks!

Daniel :)

I remember those nasty screws from my 244!

They have, " don't touch me!", written all over them and so I never did!

What's wrong with the pinch roller?

Cheers! :)

Yeah, these definitely have that "DO NOT TOUCH" label attached to 'em! :D

Well, I just wanted to clean the pinch roller with soap and water and removing it would enable me to do this thoroughly. I've read about some guy that wrecked his portastudio by using a rubber cleaner (the roller turned into "goop" after the cleaning) and so I'm affraid to even go that route. It's not that the pinch roller is in bad condition but I wanted to perform some maintenance to it as it never was cleaned.

Also, Jeff, I think I might have "over sprayed" some Deox-it into the 244's mic and jack inputs amd CaigLube (5%) into the faders, that some came flowing out and into the plastic bottom cover and back crevices etc ... I cleaned the bottom and back and it looks like there's no more "leaks" but I also think the liquid sprays came in contact with some of the pc boards etc ... The 244 works well, even a day after but .... is there a chance the Deox-it and CaigLube could damage the pc boards etc .. ?

THANKS!

Daniel :)

No. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a deoxidizing agent only and as such, it's designed to clean away rust and and oxide build up on your connection points, switches and pots.

The only caution is to keep it away from greased parts.

Cheers! :)

There is a tool for that type of screw,...

but I doubt if you can find one. Good luck on that.

Anyway, some smaller needle-nose pliers, the tips of which will fit in those detents, will work. You're right, "Service Department Only" is implied when a manufacturer uses unusual screws, like that.

There is good access to the pinchwheel and head assembly under that little panel, but full access, that which would be needed for entirely replacing the pinchwheel, would be from the bottom, with a fairly involved disassembly required.

For cleaning purposes, you'll have proper access to the heads & pinchwheel under that access cover. (Head alignment, too).

Thanks Dave (and Jeff ;) ) ..

I will try to use smaller pliers and see if I can gain access. Thanks!
