Searched the archives here, and found NOTHING!!!

Here's the deal:
My brother is a recording freak, he records his band practicing weekly. He also hates to throw things away.... As you might guess, things start to pile up. I've gotten him in the habit of archiving the originally recorded tracks to CD which is fine. He's also got some huge amount (8GB) of mixdowns that he has prepared.

I'm looking for some software (hopefully free or cheap) that will allow a batch conversion or multiple file conversion from .wav to .mp3. Yes I know about hitsquad.com, but someone could spend all day there looking at all the encoders. They need a rating system.

Anyone have a good recommendation?

Thanks,

-ps It REALLY is my brother, not me...

Set your browser for lamebatch. All the bells and whistles, including variable bit rate. This is a front end for the lame codec (best sounding converter IMHO).

Thanks Tom.

I also found TUCows.com to be a good resource, still a bazillion proggies, but it is easy to see which are free and which are not. I'll prolly use the lamebatch one, tho, cuz I've heard others rave about the codec as well.

I use soundforge for most of my Batch processing... but its expensive. I dont know the scoop on demos.. but it might work out?

Spin,
Guess you didn't read my original post?

Tom,
Looks like lamebatch will do the trick for him. It won't handle 24 bit wavs, but these were 16 bits, as they were staged for burning to CD Audio...

camn,
Are you using the batch processor with 5.0 or 4.5?

Everyone,
Thanks!

I use the batch processor on 4.5 . It lets me do all kinds of shite.

24 bit -> mp3

as far as i know, you can't do 24bit -> mp3. Im almost 100% sure you can't. i would be happy if someone could disprove me though.

hey, i put up a small 1.5Mb freeware mp3 encoder that has the Lame codec and the Fraunhofer(sp?) both included on my server. It takes either cds input digitally, or wavs from your computer.

http://claygate.net/encode/dMC-r4.exe

its good. i'll leave it up till tomorrow sometime.

yea i mean in the standalone programs that DONT support 24 bits, because... SF4.5 doesnt at all... 5.0 does yea. but imean all the other programs only support 16.

you know... now that I think about it.. I use a XING mp3 encoder... and you could set up batches in that. I dont know the bit limits, though.
