I need serious help. I spent hours in google, yahoo, and in here.
Ok heres my setup
MXL 1006 and Shure Sm58 > Euro Rack 602 A Berhengier > audiophile 24/96 > n-track
I had this setup for nearly 3 years. All i do is vocals for my rap music, no other inputs needed. I called Behringer CS today to ask how great is the pre-amp and what settings I should use. he claims they use it in every behringer model he also told me to put the gain to 12 o'clock and leave all 3 eq settings to "flat". Reason i need a mixer is because I use it for monitoring and also for my X-FI soundcard. I also tried the SM58. It sounds alittle better than the sm58 with presence, but it lacks the clearness of the mxl 1006. So my questions is:
1. Why do my vocals sound like shit. Muddy, duel, and flat? I listen to other underground soundclick artist, and I notice their voices sound alive, bright and clear. The type of sound that cacthes your attention.
2. What pre-amp gain settings should I use? I have no idea how to use it. All i know is that it makes the mic sound louder. I do know to keep it at a certain threshold or clipping will occur. The lowest gain setting says "mic 10, line +10". The highest setting says "60dB, -40dBu". What setting should i use? Average? I need a detail answer please, I spent 2 days on google and yahoo trying to find answers to these questions.
3. Is my mic the problem? I got it at sam ash for about $75 about 3 yrs ago.
4. My mixer amp the problem?
5. Whats a good standalone preamp under $180?
6. (Delta users please answer this) When recording with my Delta Audiophile 24/96 in the Delta control panel under Variable Signal Levels Output, should I select "consumer" or "-10dB"?
7. Should I bring my mixer and mic to samash to see if they could test it with better mics or use my mic or with a better mixer?
I leave all 3 eq knobs on flat.
