I need help. I have to move. The only room in the new place big enough for my studio is 15x13 with an 8 foot ceiling. It has carpet on the floor.
I'll set up the room with the mixer across the shorter wall.
One problem is that the ceiling fan is right about where I'd put an absorber (right over the mix position) so taking it out would probably be best.
Another problem is that there's a large window to the left of the mix position (where another absorber should go for reflection points) and I can't figure out how I could hang one there (or if the window would be a sound problem in general. And behind me on my right at the back of the room is the door. I want to put a bass traps in the corners but there's not much space between the door (when it's opened) and the corner wall. I'm really considering ordering the GIK Room Kit #1 but I'm not sure if this is what I'd need especially with the door problem. There's also a closet directly in the center of the back wall which wouldn't allow for the Gik Monster Trap (unless maybe if it were mounted and I could move it when needed).
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

PIC #1. back wall with door open to the left and closet
PIC #2. ceiling fan right above my mix position, slightly behind my head - where absorber should go?
PIC #3. back corner with door open showing practically no room for bass trap
PIC #4. window opposite my left ear at mix position, how to hang absorber? (and is the window a problem? should it be covered?)

Punch,

15 x 13 x 8 is not too bad - the room is 1560 cubic feet and above the minimum volume requirements. You will want to position yourself 68 1/2 inches from the front wall (mark a spot on the floor).
For placement of the ceiling cloud and side RFZ panels go here and get my First Reflection Calculator. You may find that the ceiling cloud will be placed forward enough to miss the fan. ;)
The panel that needs to be in front of the window can be built on a stand or hung on wires. The GIK monster trap can be hung in front of the closet doors or even place inside where it will still be effective. The difference with the trap being inside or out of the closet is that you will get unwelcome reflections from the louvers on the doors with the doors closed.
Traps don't necessarily need to go in vertical corners. Horizontal corners do just as well, like the wall/ceiling corner and/or the wall/floor corners.

Once you get the GIK kit installed you should test your room and add and/or move treatment as necessary. Good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers,
John

John,
Thanks very much. You make a lot of sense. I'll check out your calculator too.
As far as the closet doors go, I'll have things like microphones and other relatively hard surface items stored in there so I'd need to keep the doors closed when recording or mixing. Maybe I could get a stand for the Gik Monster Trap and place it in FRONT of the closet doors. This way I could move the trap when I need to access something from inside the closet. Making it portable might be useful for other things also like maybe for placing the trap near a vocal mic.

Glenn (from GIK) said something similar in reference to the corner behind the door. He said to either put 2 panels in the back open corner or straddle an 'upper ceiling to wall' corner.

By straddling an 'upper ceiling to wall' corner, I think he means to put a bass trap (or some kind of wedge) across ceiling/wall corner right above the door.

Thanks again,
Jimmi:)

Exactly right.

Thanks,
I forgot to mention that the floor is covered in rug!
I know the GIK Room Kit #1 comes with one absorber panel for a ceiling cloud. Since there's a rug on the floor, can I get away with just the one on the ceiling? Or would I probably need more ceiling treatment (even with the rug floor)?

That's a bit hard to say. The way to go about it is to leave expansion room by putting the first ceiling panel up between you and your speakers. That leaves room for a second one directly over your head.

Thanks
I ordered some panels and stands yesterday from GIK.
I'll let you know how it all works out.
