I have a Teac 33-8 1/2" Reel to Reel 8 track machine and It has a broken tachometer, Without it I basically have a paperweight!, If anybody has one or know someone that does or somewhere to go I would really appriciate it!

How is it broken? Is the tach wheel itself damaged? If not, it's probably the light gate LED/sensor which should be easy to repair. Are you sure that it's not just got dirty?

I think you can still get the tach rollers from TEAC, but I'm not sure.

i think he is right
MY fostex machine has a similar design after the first autostop switch there is a roller on the left side that has 2 led's then a light sensor for the tachometer. I will post a breakdown chart so you get the idea.

Ok these 2 images will be similar to the tachometer unit on your machine. And to be honest there is little if anything that can go wrong with these, the only issue i have had with mine is the bearings are starting to get a little noisy.

Worst case senario would be tat the LED's have burnt out and need replacing

The service guys (alive sound in burbank, CA) have been trying teac japan and they thought they had one but when they sent it, it turned out to be something compleatly different:-( I will foward this thread to the service guys and maybe we may be on to something. I honestly cant tell the difference between a tachometer and a thanksgiving turkey! If the fostex one seems to be suitable, Id be more than happy to pick it up.

Sorry, I was thinking of the TSR-8, where the rubberized roller to the left of the headstack is the tachometer. Apparently the 30-series have the tach assembly directly attached to the right-hand reel shaft, although my schematics don't seem to show it.

This is a slightly wild idea, but you or your tech should be able to make a replacement tach system using bits of mouse. That came out wrong.. bits of computer mouse. Traditional (ball) mice have a pair of motion-sensor disks, one for each axis, since they need to do the same thing as the tape deck. If you can figure out how to connect it mechanically, it should be trivial to interface to the Tascam counter logic - all you need to know is in the service manual.
Optical mice with the wheel button also do this - again, the wheel needs to be able to detect direction and speed.

It won't give you seconds unless you can somehow gear it perfectly, but it will give you some frame of reference.

Well i have a teac A-3300S and there are 2 parts that i need and those are :-

Reel turntable + center spindle and locking assembly

Automatic stop control unit - (supposed to attach to right hand reel trailer arm inside the machine but is missing and was bypassed by previous owner of the machine which caused 60v AC current to be discharged into the metal frame of the machine).

If anyone has any idea on where i can obtain these 2 parts from, please let me know.

Keith

Okay, call me stupid, but...

I don't see why a non-functioning tach on a 33-8 makes it unusable. The tach on that machine is simply for the tape counter, which is responsible for Zero-Stop function, and nothing else. It doesn't regulate speed or any other function. All the primary functions (play/rec/ff/rw) should work correctly without it.

If the 33-8 won't play, move tape or regulate speed, perhaps you have another problem, like the solenoids sticking & not moving the pinch roller completely to contact the capstan, or the brake solenoids not releasing the brakes.

???
;)

Thats all a tachometer does? work the little digital counter? I was under the impression you needed it to use the machine. I may be able to go without that. It may be difficult though.

On the 33-8,... yes.

On the 388, TSR-8 & MSR16/24, the tach is responsible for positioning and sync.

On the 33-8, all the tach does is the tape counter & RTZ function.

;)
