Well... It's getting closer and closer to the summer, until my graduation, and to the graduate loan :D

Hence, i'm looking at borrowing around £2500 ($3500 USD)

I intend to build a small studio, and make it portable, as I'm not sure where in the country I'll be asked to move with my next job.

This is the list i'm drawing together, if you see a big NO-No then please reply in this thread...

---------------------------------------------

PIII Rackmount computer, with a Delta 1010 soundcard
(I have computer building experience, that shoudl eb no problem)

---------------------------------------------

Behringer Composer Pro (Stereo Compressor)
-- I have a small trade account with Behringer

---------------------------------------------

Behringer Ultragain 2200 (Tube Stereo Mic Pre)
or a Joe Meek VC3Q
Admittedly, the 2200 doesnt have a compressor, but I could use my other compressor for that.

---------------------------------------------

Microphones:
AKG Drum kit setup
2 x C1000s + D1112 + 4 X C418/PP

Also, for Vocals either
MXL v67
Rode NT1
Octavia 219
AT3035

Plus 1 x SM58 and 1 x SM57

----------------------------------------------

Samson Power Amp

-----------------------------------------------
Plus stands and snakes etc. I already have monitors and a mixer

Spirit Zero Monitors
Allen & Heath GS1 Mixing desk

Good shopping list, or could I improve it? Remember that i'm on a small budget to try and get it all....

If you are choosing between the Beh 2200 and the Joe Meek pre-am, go with the Joe Meek unit. I have one here and its much warmer than the Behringer unit.

Other than that, the list looks fine. I've recently discovered that a used Roland PM-16 (drum controller) and a set of old beat up Simmons drum pads fit into a large suitcase, and is a smaller way of toting drums around if you move frequently. If you trigger a sampler you can change sounds at will. Might be out of your budget, but I picked up my two simmons drumsets and the PM-16 for very little money on e-bay. Maybe just a lucky fluke, but it was well spent. Now I don't have to have a full kit in the corner of the room, and can sample any sound I want. I use a cheap, used Roland S-550 sampler for my percussion requirements, plus various drumkits that are in my multi-timbral midi modules (like the SC880, and the MU90R). Flexibility, less space, and can fit into a suitcase :)

If you are traveling with your gear a lot, I would highly recommend a proper "flight case" for your rack mount gear. The cases that are airplane certified (AFA comes to mind?) has thicker walls and more isolated mounting to protect your gear investment.

Hope that helps!

Aside from the D112, I don't really like the AKG Drum package, I prefer the sound of good old 57's, Senheisser 421's or even E604's (for toms).

If however you like the way the AKG's sound, or if you are getting a killer deal on them then go ahead.

Good Luck.

ACK Drumkit Set

the main reason for choosing the AKG drum kit set is that I can get them very very cheap.

the price from turnkey (one of the UK's leading pro audio shops) is about £699 (about $999) but, I can get them for about £500, so as you can imagine, it's a killer deal.

Also, as the kit comes with two C1000's (which are brilliant for acoustic guitar) I figured i'd be killing two birds with one stone.

:p

If you think i'm being foolish, then please, tell me so!

As for the Joe meek or the Behringer, i've decided to get a JM47 Trakoak Q, which is basically a JM47 Mic and a VC3Q mic pre.

Good idea? My Allen and Heath GS! mixing desk has a basic mic pre in it, but, to be honest, i always thought a dedicated pre would be better. :)

Thanks again for your response, and if anyone has any thoughts along these lines, please add to this thread!
