Hi, I have a couple old Ampex 489 dm120's tapes I wanted to transfer into wave files but nobody in my area has the gear to do it. Can anyone help me?

I think Adats are digital multitrack recordings on VHS type tapes. So while they "look" analog they're all digital. Just about any decent studio in your area should be able to transfer the tracks for you, I should imagine.

cheers Tim

These guys do adat transfers to wave in any format. I've sent people there for conversions of all types of things including analog tape to wave. While I'm thinking about it, they're also one of the sources for building the hard to find cables that come up on these threads every so often (midiizer acc2 cables etc). Plus, I've been buying various daw interfaces/software etc from them over the past couple of years since they come through with better price matches than I get through the normal sources here in L.A. If I had the time, I'd do a lot of the same stuff they do since they seem to have a niche for integrating analog and digital solutions.

Thanks for your help guys, Yes, they do look like Vhs tapes. I will check out that link BRDTS, I really appreciate the help.

It might be cheaper and easier to just go buy a Adat conpatible card and do it yourself. Find a used one and then sell it when you are done

ADAT is on SVHS (Much higher resolution and dynamic range, than VHS. Comparable to high Beta 8mm)
Later ones are 20bit linear/48kHz.

ADAT machines record in digital but have both analog and digital inputs & outputs, they have both A/D & D/A converters. The best method to transfer is by Toslink(light pipe) connections. Sends digital across fiber optics to computer card for example or DAW/digital mixer, that have Toslink connectors. Or you can just send thru RCA analog outs to analog mixer or recorder. Then master & Burn. Anyone with an ADAT machine, probably has enough equipment to do this. Pretty easy to do. Could also just leave them on a computer in .wav for archiving. You are in Analog forum, so if ya got a mixer and 1/2 track deck, you could just go RCA analog out thru mixer to Deck and have it on RtR.
Wish you were close, I'd just loan ya an LX-20 to do it.
Ask around, someones gotta have one close to ya. Do it yourself and save the bucks.
Good luck :)

PM me if you want to send them to me, maybe I could do it for you. PM me with more details. I don't use computer, but do have ADAT's, Mixers & Stand-alone Hard disk, & CD-RW Burner, so could burn redbook CD's for ya. You then, could rip them to your computer.
