It appears that my Mackie 1604VLZ is crapping out. I've looked at the Mackie forum site and it appears to be a well know problem I'm having. I even called the local Mackie repair station and the guy immediately new what it was. It looks like it's going to cost just under $400 (board) and takes 6-8 weeks to get the parts from Mackie.

Needles to say I'm incredibly dissatisfied. What other options are out there that would match this mackie's capabilities? This is for a small home recording studio.

Thanks,
Easto

Yes, although not at this moment... I plan on live recording a friends band and would like to have some headroom when this rolls around. I particularly like the 4 bus configuration. I do have an Adat that I sometimes use (not that much any more) and would like to be able to send 8 while monitoring 8 channels.

Thanks

The Soundcraft Spirit M12 might work for you. It has 12 mono recording channels with direct outs; but also four stereo input channels that you might be able to use for returns. It's affordably priced pretty versatile.

Seems like other folks on the board use a 16-ch Yamaha mixer. I'm not that familiar with it, but sounds like it doesn't have direct channel outs. You can use the channel inserts for this, but then you can't have an insert effect on the channel. With the M12 you'll get both a direct out and insert on every channel.

Further up from there are the Allen&Heath Mixwizard boards. They get good reviews but are more expensive.

I have the 1402VLZ am I possibly in the same boat?

I have had my mackie 1402VLZ for sheesh it seems 10 years? is that right?
I never owned another real mixer so I never have had a problem with it other than I need to spray out the faders and jacks every now and then. I know I am probably not even in the same league as others here but I might I havnt been able to figure that out. I record out of a computer into a JV1080 and Alesis DM5. Process with Lexicon effects primarily and then back into the mackie. I couldnt really imagine having a different mixer if you want to know the truth. I dont want on board effects. I wanted the 1604VLZ but I couldnt afford it at the time. What happened to it?

It appears that it might be fixed by purchasing a wire "ribbon" kit for $99 from Mackie. I called their parts dept and I told them that I think it is only 1 ribbon. The sales rep said that because of so many failures and to cover all the angles they only sell them in kits now. Since I'm not 100% sure the tech to dianosed this over the phone had it correct I'm probably going to purchase the ribbon kit and install it myself. Hopefully it will fix things and I can save approx $280 and 6 weeks in the shop.

That sounds like the best option (or at least the cheapest).
