I need to purchase a pair of powered near-field monitors. I read a massive post (that spanned 3 years!) and I'm still unsure.

I can't go over $500 US. Suggestions?

Hey, I'm looking for some too! My budget is a bit less though. I'm considering:

Event 20/20 V2 Passive Monitor ($149 each)
Roland DS30A Digital Reference Monitor ($195 each)
Alesis Monitor One Mk2 (Pair) ($199 pair)
Event TR5 Powered (Pair) ($299 pair)

Right now, for the price and the fact that they are powered, I'm thinking the TR5's. I'm doing mostly voiceover and commercial work, though I do record and mix tunes periodically.

Any recommendations, cautions, or otherwise, on the above? pdaniels, have you considered any of those?

Thanks for the suggestions so far! Here is a thought:

I have a Pioneer home theatre amp. Can I use it and Passive monitors? Or would that be defeating the purpose?
It has a "direct" mode that bypasses the DSP processing.

Just a thought that might save me some $$/let me get better quality passive monitors.

And I just checked the back of that amp and it seems to have 2 sets of RCA jack outputs. So the proper connectivity is there... (even if I have to use RCA to 1/4" cables).

Home theater amps don't give flat response, try the Hafler Amps, they are inexpensive and very good for passive speakers.

I got the same deal from gear1 on the YSM1P's, though shortly after they upped their price, and I'm not sure if the sale is still on...

I didn't know they would be so heavy! I am extremely happy with mine though...

Well, hear's the deal:

Pretty much nobody sells those Yorkville monitors, and the few who do sell it won't ship to Canada. And if I want these monitors soon, I need to go with AMS because of the Easy Pay option. I hate saving up...

So I've narrowed it down to either the Event TR6, or the Alesis Monitor 1 Active.
What do we think of the Alesis? It has better bass frequency response than the Event... if that matters...

Just got back from Woodwind & Brasswind (only an hour away). I took a chance and picked up the Alesis M1 Active Mk2 monitors. I've been listening to a few commercial CD's and home mixes...dude! I'm only a couple of hours into them, but I am definitely not disappointed. And given my current budget, I reckon I will be happy with them for awhile. :) BTW, they were $349 for the pair, which was better than the catalog price.

what i just got and love
are
M-Audio BX5's for 300
then at my work i got a
Advent 12" 100watt subwoofer for 100 bucks
and it sounds really good together
i work at a wholesale club thats y the sub was so cheap

Do people think the extra few hundred dollars to get Mackie HR 624s over the Yorkvilles worth it?

The Yorkville YSM1p active monitors rock.I picked up a pair for $419 total from Gear 1, they were 5% off, which covered shipping.
That was the best deal on 'em that I found.

Just bought mine last night. I've been emailing back and forth with a guy from ebay that's selling them for $460. He said he's talked to Yorkville and they're pissed they're selling them for so cheap, so I'd buy them asap before the price goes up.

Yorkville YSM1p Studio Monitors 419.95

It's the best investment I've made in a long time.
