This cpu is supposed to be the most bang for the buck out their now, so I am thinkin of swapping out my hot and noisy 1.2 t-bird/Iwill KK266 combo for the pentium. I already have a friend waitin to scoop up the t-bird so I won't be stuck with it.
1. What board can you guys recommend?
2.What temps are your cpu running under load?
3.Are any of you overclocking the 1.6a?
4.If o.c. are you still able to maintain a cool and quiet pc environment?how?
Tia for any advice or experience you would like to share.

There is a whole group of people on another site that use this cpu with an Asus P4B266. They call themselves ANUS (Asus-Northwood User's Society). If you do a search for "OPUS2000" on http://www.nuendo.com/forum/ you will find alot of useful info including overclocking to 2.13g.

I currently use an Abit TH-7 non-raid. You may to go with the DDR model of the board though if you want to overclock. You may also look into the new IT-7. Looks pretty nice. I've been happy with both Asus and Abit boards. The manuals are better for Abit though which leads me to be a little biased towards them.

I just built my first computer with a P4 1.6A, prior to doing so I was a real computer knownothing. I used a Gigabyte GA-8IRXP.

Setup is easy, the documentation is thorough, and overclocking is painfree, although I don't partake as I hardly see the need when recording. I purchased through newegg and couldn't be happier.

Here's a link to the mobo's webpage.

Thanks Evildick and MightyOne for the ideas and links.
I was hoping to reuse 640mb of pc133 sdram I have. I will spring for ddr or rimms if the most solid motherboards only use those types of memory,or if their is a significant compatibility or performance issue with the P4 1.6a processor.
I would also like to get a board with an Award bios since I am most familiar with them.
So far the only board I have found that uses pc133 is Intel's D845WN.

Keith,

Ya can't go wrong with the ASUS P4B266. But think seriously about moving to DDR RAM. The SDRAM will just make the system unable to reach it's potential.

I am in the same boat as you. I am just about to purchase a 1.6a but I am waiting for the ASUS P4B533-V (with the Intel 845g chipset) to make an appearance at my local dealers. This board can handle the PC2700 (DDR333) RAM and kicks some serious ass.

Happy hunting.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

Thank you Cuzin B for your insight, and heads up on the new chipset.
I do like Asus boards, and since I usually stay off the bleeding edge I will probably look at the p4b266-c.
Don't understand why it only has 2 dimm slots though.
Hope I can run it at 2.1ghz stable and cool, that would probably satiate my increasing reliance on input monitoring and need for sub 2ms latency.

Keith,

You would be better off getting the P4B266 with audio (not the -c variation.) The audio can easily be turned off in the BIOS.

This version has 3 DIMM slots instead of 2. That's exactly what I was worried about too...although I haven't bought the new mobo yet.

Cheers,

Cuzin B

Thanks again ,Cuzin B.
I did see a version of the new chipset at new egg.com, I don't think it was the configuration you were looking for but it was runnin $147 I think. PC2700 to go with it seemed a little pricey too.
Probably worth it though at the rate that we outgrow systems.
