Hi,

I'm using a Tascam 4-track (424MK111) as a mixer linked up to a Tascam US-122 soundcard and recording directly to the computer onto CEP2.0. I want a better sound, as I do hear a slight hiss on each track. I do not have a mic pre amp or any other effects. I think I need a mixer. Also, I use SM57/58.

Can I get a better mixer if I get just that, no effects onboard?
Or should I get one that offers some basic effects?

I record folk/indie type music, acoustic guitars, some electric, some keys, bass, lotsa vocals. I find myself sometimes adding a bit of reverb to certain tracks, but try to stay true to the sound. However, some of the stuff I do is kinda spacey, so I do sometimes get lost in the reverb. Options are good to have.

Price range is under 300, but I could go higher if I should. I really don't want to have to keep upgrading, and I love recording a whoooooole bunch.

The onboard effects are usually not as good you'd get from independent processors.

For a mixer that is cheap, small and has basic effects I'd recommend Mackie DFX12. From what I've heard from my friends it has a great sound and the effects sound pretty decent.
My own experience with Behringer mixers has been great.. For the price, you most certainly get the best you could. The one I mainly carried with me while travelling, UB1202 mixer worked totally great until I busted it with european 220V :) shit happens!
Yamaha MG16/4 is also something you could check out.
