I would like your honest opinion about this song. It has been said on another site that people don't really give thier true opinions on some peoples music. So no sugar coating. If you don't like then shove it in my face. There will be no recrimination toward any member here.

Some thoughts first. The recording was done just to check out the mic placements, so there are a few minor mistakes. But still want to know about my playing ability and recording quality of the music. I want to know what you think I'm doing wrong and what you think I'm doing right.

Like I said, it is just a solo acoustic guitar piece, and if you have time to listen 'Thank You'

Wanderings

Sounds pretty sweet. Very nice playing too.

What type of room was it done in? I think there is a slight problem around 200hz (or around there). Could be too much sound hole or effects of the room.

Can you tell us how many mics and the positions?

I just cant say enough good things about quality players who have a good sense of dynamics.

No discredit to your recording prowess, this recording sounds nice.

But if you used the same mics on some person that was just bashing into the acoustic with a hard pick.......

You get my point.

no sugar coating: I really enjoy this song. Very relaxing, not boring, still entertaining... and it makes me feel ... happy. In fact, it makes me feel relief. Title fits the mood. I'd buy the CD. reminds me of the movie "the princess bride".

mind you, could just be my personal preference on style... very talented.

very nice...

Nice full rich tone/sound. I really like it. I can see what the other person was talking about the low end thing, that bass, but i dont necessarily not like that...might be giving it the full rich sound it has, you never know.

Doing one instrument sole, and not having to make any tradeoffs for other tracks and instruments, letting the meter swing wide, ah, the simple, chiseled naked decadence of it.

but i digress...sound top notch to me.

careful getting that bass out of it...dont wanna leave it thin.

almost forget...

sounds great, but i forgoit you also wondered about your playing/songwriting/arranging....

dont fret it, i dont think anyones sugarcoating you when they tell you youre pretty good. (lol)

I'd like to thank everyone who listened, and a special thank you to everyone who responded. To some of your questions, the room is a 10'X10' spare bedroom. With single bed, two chairs, 3'X6' desk with music computer, small entertainment center and amp, guitars, and nothing on the walls but 5 clocks. I build clocks for friends. :D

The mic's are 2 MXLV67's in as close to X/Y configuration as I can get them. The right mic aimed at about the 10th fret and the left mic aimed toward the bottom of the guitar. They run to a Delta 66 Omni.

The problem with the low end may be caused by either the Taylor 710 I'm using or possibly the M-Audio SP-5B monitors. The low end response on the monitors leave something to be desired, I'm afraid. I guess I should really burn a wave and see what it sounds like on a stereo system. Also on the playing I use a thumb pick which I know is also not very desireable, but I've always used one and it's hard to change, you know.

Once again thanks for the truth, and the kind words. It's somehow refreshing to know that people in the past were'nt BSing me when they said it sounded good.

Thanks again,

PS grn, if or when I put the CD out I'll have to let you know. :D

It's really nice. You definitely need to tame some of the low mids somewhere. The reason I say that is because I honestly cannot tell if there's a bass in here...I mean, there's bass coming from somewhere, but if it's another (bass) instrument as opposed to a chording guitar, I can't tell...lacks separation. If it's just a guitar doing that, I'd definitely tame it below 300Hz.

Having said that, I probably wouldn't have noticed a problem if I hadn't been listening with my engineer ears, lol.

Listened to Shanty too...nice little baroquesque..ish piece. :D

Thanks for the info!
That bass issue I hear is probably the room but don't worry. It sounds very nice. A touch of eq would tame it.

Thanks once again. Chris, I think I might know where that extra bass sound is coming from. And if anyone can help it would be appreciated. I'm using the Sir reverb plug-in and I did'nt put any compensation in for the plug-ins latency.

I have downloaded Sample Slide but can't seem to get the thing to work. Not really sure where to put the damn thing. I've put it almost every where I can think of, but it just won't show up in the Logic software. The software says to put it in the vst folder but that just does'nt work. I've put it in the program section of the computer and tried to access it from there with no luck. I'm lost with this thing.

Guess I could try the Ambience reverb plug-in. It is also pretty good, but the sound of the Lexicon convolution in Sir is just to good to pass up. And that is where my problem arises. :(
