Need Help!

I have been playing acoustic guitar now for about 8 years. I love writing and making music, so I was thinking about making a studio in my basement. Now the only problem is I know nothing of the electronics or construction of a studio. So i am in need of some major help. If anyone could help me out here it would be greatly appreciated. What I really need to know is what supplies do i need to make this studio? That goes for lumber and all of the electrical stuff. I would mainly want this to record just vocals and acoustic guitar. As of now i would not put a drum set or any type of electric guitar or bass in there, but that may come later. I would like to put my piano in there also and maybe some other stringed instruments such as the violin or something. So i would greatly appreciate your help.

Do you have any construction experience???

What are the dimensions of your room???

it's not really necessary to have a control room and seperate live room if you're only recording yourself or even a duo or trio. it's nice, but not required.

Also, if you're going to record acoustic instruments, you don't need "soundPROOFING" as much as you need soundTREATMENT.

A more "live" space will sound better IMHO than a "dead" space with acoustic instruments.

Anyway, the reading on the above sites should keep you busy for a while.

Also, do you have a soundcard, monitors, headphones, any mics or preamps or mixer???
 
Yes I do have some construction experience so I would know how to build it I just don't know where to start. It's about a 15' by 10' space so it's not that big, but I think it will be big enough with 8 foot ceilings. I don't have any equipment yet that's why I need some help and my budget will be kind of tight right now. I'm planning on building my own computer for this though. So there is some more info for you. Okay, that's great.

Electrically, here's what you want.

Use only ONE PHASE for your power. Preferably all your gear and your computer/hard disk recorder/whatever are all on ONE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUIT.

Use 20-amp breakers and hospital grade outlets and you can use a star-ground, which means each individual outlet has it's own ground path back to your panel. And 20-amps of 120v AC should be plenty to run your entire rig. At 80% rating that gives you 1920W to use.

If you wind up with a couple big amps at some point, you might wanna use 2 circuits. Again, make sure both circuits are the SAME PHASE.

For other considerations, please refer to the links provided above. You are in a much better position to determine your needs than anyone on this BBS could possibly be regarding what it will take to treat your room.

What advantage does the star ground give? Does it help with ground loops or something? Or is it just safer? TELL ME TELL ME TELL ME :D

Star grounding doesn't just help with ground loops, it eliminates them.
