Need help with TL Audio Ivory 1 5051

Hello!

I´m new to this forum and I hope someone´s out there to eliminate my problem.

I own a Neumann U87 mic and a TL Audio Ivory 1 5051 Micpre.

I tried to find out how to get the best sound for vocals...


In Cubase and Nuendo either, I haven´t got a satisfying result.

Is anyone here with much knowledge of this micpre and its settings?

You gotta' Neumann U87 and can't get it to sound good!!??

the problem is, that I don´t have much pressure on the record.

it sounds light and not loud enough.


It needs a good setting on the tl audio 5051 micpre to sound good, but I´m new into it and don´t know how to manage the input and output, compressor, eq and gate at it´s best.


After some hours I got a better result, but I´m not ver lucky with it.

I hope someone can give me some tips.

Should there be more input then output and so on...

I used to own a 5051 and never seemed to get any satifsfying
results out of it. I sold it.......

As a general rule, adjust input gain til it clips and back off a few dB`s, set compressor to medium attack and fast release, and compress 4-10 dB at 8: 1, for modern in your face sound.

Well Neve,basically what you just stated is the guide-line for most
mic-to-pre standards!

Que Pasa E.G.!? Assuming you're seeking a well-rounded voc track with aforementioned equipment, start with a low thresh/ratio comp level and use the 1st of the 4 attack & release times(5ms & 40ms respectively).Gain hot w/o clip and experiment
from there. I'm no voc expert, but advice posted by knowledgeable members reccomended starting points to determine most favorable use.
 
Eddie, you can use these settings on the 5051 for a good place to start:
And these setting will work for most applications, for vocals, acoustic, el guitar, organ, piano. Just set it and leave it until you learn a bit more. But don't worry, these setting will deliver good results. I use the following as the default settings - and tweak from there is need be.

INPUT - 12 o'clock
Threshold - -10db
Ratio - 1:4 ---good general ratio for most things going to tape
Gain Makeup - 12 o'clock
Attack -fast
Release - fast
Output - 12 o'clock
Meter - O/P

The EQ - just leave it flat - or, of course w/ your ears if you want to post slightly - say for brighter vocals try +2db at 2K2 on the HM knob, and +2db at 5K on the HF knob. Don't be afraid to play around a little w/ the EQ, you'll be able to hear it move. Print this EQ Primer out. It will really help. Use it, you'll really hear the difference.

If you need less level on your DAW, turn down the OUTPUT on the 5051. If you need more level on your DAW, turn up the OUTPUT on the 5051.

Another thing. You'll see a little 90hz button w/ a line over it - next to the INPUT knob on the 5051. That's is a 90Hz roll-off.

Have it on the OUT position, if your recording anything w/ a low of low-end, like a bass, piano or a low synth. Have it on the IN position for any other sources that DO NOT have super low-end, like guitar, chimes, some percussion. I usually use it on the IN position for vocals.

Doing that will give you a cleaner low-end on you mixes because source like guitars will not be crowding the low-end.
 
So let's get rid of the carefull stuff. one great thing about hte TLAudio comps is they know how work hard.....
Without kidding. I recorded a cd with the lead vocals going to the comp with these settings...
Theshold -20dB
Ration 20:1
Attack/release fast.

One of the best vocal sounds I had till now. Philosophy behind this is actually simple. If you use a higher compression ratio, you'll hear it kick in when the threshold is exceeded. One way to avoid this is to have the signal always exceed the threshold. It's sounds silly, and will defenitly not work on a cheap comp. The guy that thought me this trick is international known for his engineering. One of those tricks that either works for you, or is completly out of proportion.

Give it a try!. My gain reduction meter was almost not coming out of the corner!

Does anyone have any good presets for the TL Audio Ivory 5051??

Like Presets for Acoustic Guitar / Vocals / Bass etc???

I've tried some of the user presets in this section and they are good.

Does anyone out there have anymore?

I even emailed TL audio themselves to see if they could give
me some presets, but they never replied!!!!

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!
