I'm pretty newb when it comes to rack gear and recording chains, so I decided to buy the RNC, but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm not quite sure how to set the thing up. I am recording all my tracks with the M-Audio Firewire Solo using only one mic. The M-audio has one XLR mic input and a pair of unbalanced ones, plus 2 balanced outputs. It records fine without the cables running through the RNC, so there isn't a problem with the recorder itself. What I'm trying to say is, where and how should I place the RNC in the recording chain. I've tried just about every possible combination on its I/O coming from the mic and going into the recorder. The levels on the M-Audio and Software's mixer don't seem to jump when I strum, but instead a loud hissing sound is being recorded. The volume of the hiss goes up or down when turning the RNC's gain knob higher or lower... so it is responding; its just not recording.

P.S. I'm using one XLR-F to 1/4 TRS from the mic to the RNC and one XLR-M to 1/4 TRS from the RNC to M-Audio.

Well, I, myself, just found out recently you need the mic to go to a preamp first, before it can go to the compressor. So, I think you cannot use the RNC at all with your current set up. Unless you can go from the mic to the maudio, back out to the compressor, and then back to the maudio.

You should be able to route it through Solos mic input, out through one of the balanced outs and back into the Solo's guitar input. The pre on the Solo's mic input doesn't have much power (I'm using one) so I don't know what kind of results you'd get. But if the settings in your DAW are only to record from channel 2 you should be okay. Try XLR into mic input on the Solo, 1/4TRS from Balanced 1 to the left input on the RNC 1/4 TS from left out in the RNC to instrument in on the Solo. All 1/4" inputs in the Solo are unbalanced.

You need to use a TS cable. The RNC is setup so that if you use a TRS cable from a preamp or mixer Insert then you only need the one cable for both in and out plugged into the RNC input.

If you are using both the in and out jacks on the RNC you need to use unbalanced TS cables.
