I'm no good at mixing or mastering, so I could use some guidance on what I'm doing right or wrong with this. I can't get it to sound anything like commercial music, it's sounds too thin or something..

Listen to this

I have used Sonar and T-racks for this one. Listen to it and let me know what you think.

Any sort of SPL meter...

I use a Klark-Teknik spectrum analyzer (live mic in the control room) and it gives the SPL reading - but the Rat Shack one will work...

I think the thin quality you're refering to has very little to do with mastering.

It has a lot more to do with the way the drums were tracked -- which I'm assuming are samples? And the guitars, which I'm guessing to be POD or some other type of amp modeler.

I'd actually go so far as to say that the mixing and mastering are your strong suit. You've got some tracking issues.

Chessrock,

yes, you are right. The drums are sampled, and the guitar is recorded through a POD. I guess it's hard to get the right sound using that equipment.

Thanks for the input all!

Think fat and all will be fat (in time after lots and lots of practice and mistakes). If not let the pros do it.
Speaking of that though, i have heard recordings from decent studios that have sounded pretty thin. I couldnt part with so much money to end up with a thin recording. I would rather have a recording that has some character to it (be it slightly un normal).

I've read all the articles you have suggested, and made som adjustments to the mix. I think it has gotten better, altough it hasn't got the professional feel quite yet. The next step will be to record some live drums and guitar, and that will hopefully take it to the next level. I thank you all for the help!
