Hi, I'm new here and pretty much a rookie at midi. I'm using a Korg 01W/FD synth, Sound Blaster Platinum sound card and Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. I'm connecting the synth to my pc using a midi cable connected to the midi/joystick port of the pc.
The problem is, when I try to use the synth as a controller I'm able to hear some sounds but the sounds just suddenly changes by itself randomly. Ex: Drum sounds suddenly changes to piano and then some other weird sample sounds when I continue to play on the keyboard. This makes it impossible to play anything properly. Can somebody please help me out with how to setup my rig properly? If it is possible, could someone also teach me how to do these midi setups in Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and in the Korg 01W/FD?
Thank you so much...

Sincerely,
Wong.

This seems to happen when both the midi in and midi out are connected to the pc's joystick/midi port.

Are you hitting the patch change buttons on the Korg? That could be sending a program change command.

I've never heard of anything changing patches randomly like that. Something has to be telling it what to do or there is something seriously defective.

I was'nt hitting any patch change button on the Korg. Only thing I was pressing is the keyboard of the synth.
I was thinkin myself too, how could it change patches randomly by itself?...really weird.
Well I'm just wondering, could it be something to do with the settings in Cakewalk or the Korg?

You need to isolate what triggers the patch change.

Does it happen when you hit a certain note? It's possible a note has been assigned to patch change. Hit the keys one at a time and see if that triggers the change.

Is it only doing it on one song that you are playing along with? You might have accidentally recorded some patch changes in a track and it's sending that from the sequencer.

Does it change patches if you dont do anything? Are you sure it is changing patches and not playing a bunch of them together?

Are these the sounds from the Korg? Is it in Combi mode?

As I know, you must enter to Seq mode, for sure to conect it to external sequencer. Set all MIDI chanels on O1's each tracks corespond to each on Cakewalk. Ex. Track 1 MIDI Chanel 1, Track 2 MIDI Chanel 2, so on... If there is still program change things happen, go to Global setting on O1, set prog. change to anything but ENA (dis, prog, num)... see what's going on...

Malaysia ? Ke' mana kabar Pa Ci ?

Hey there, guys. Sorry I did'nt post a reply for so long. Got a little busy. Anyway I've been trying all the methods you guys suggested but my rig still does'nt work properly. The same problem still arises. Is there some things I have to set in the Track Properties in Cakewalk? I tried doing what James Argo said but the result is still the same. I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks guys.

P.S.
Hey James, where are u from? Indonesia ?

To be honest, unless you can figure out what is triggering the patch changes it is impossible to trouble shoot. If it is a truly random occurence than something is malfunctioning.

I have a feeling there is something you are missing about the setup. Are you sure it is actually randomly changing patches? It would make sense if maybe you were playing a layered patch or something that is throwing you off.

Just so I understand here. Are the sounds coming from the Korg or the SoundBlaster? If you want to play the Korg sounds make sure the Korg is in Combi mode (I think James is mistaken but I could be wrong) and that LOCAL is turned OFF.

Yes, it can be done also in Comb. mode, but limited only for 8 tracks. In seq. Mode, you can have all 16 tracks on the road. :D And about the program change in O1, it's NOT only controlled by prog. change message, but can be also by MIDI controller Num. 0 & 32. Check your O1's manual for more detail (I hope you got one...), and get back here for more specific questions. :)
