need help with FOSTEX F160 recorder a lot of distortion

I am new to the forums and was hoping someone could help me with a recording quality issue? I have a Fostex F160 recorder and the last time I tried to use it the recording came out very distorted.
Could it be due to the age? It is around 10 years old. I was told it could be due to the CD-ROM possibly being defective but Im not sure how to go about verifying this.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Ok, simple things first. Have you tried recording something at low-level first, to check you're not clipping anywhere?

A CD-ROM is READ-ONLY, so it ain't that! I'm guessing, assuming you are not tracking too loud, that something in the input circuit is fried
