Iam new to recording so bear with me, I have sonar 4 and have recently recorded with the built-in drum sounds, but forgot how i set it up, now i'm stuck again. I've been trying to set up the drum map manager, but haven't been able to get the proper cymbal, tom, etc. noises. All i can hear is sort of squeaking, almost like a dog.

Sonar has no built in sounds. The sounds you hear is the sounds in Windows (I'm guessing that crappy MS-soft synth).

What equipment do you have?

I just find it strange that people still pay $800 with no clue on how to use it or no other equipment ;)

Do you have any soft syth's installed? If so then use the DXI manager to insert a softsynth into the bus. It will then add 2+ tracks to your project. Now go into the midi track it created and set (one of the 3 settings, i can't remember, i do know it's the top setting where to AUX send WOULD BE) and set it to channel 10.

10 is usually the GM drum maps, and then either use the Virtual keyboard or your real midi keyboard to lay down some drums....

this is a really general way of doing it and you should consult the manual or help for better instructions on getting setup. Plus I'm writing this off the top of my head.
