Need help with Cool Edits maximzing volume

Does anyone here know how I can raise the volume on a sound smple clip with out making the punch and bass dissipate? I make sound effects from video clips , mostely gun shots and such, I wanted to raise the volume on some explosion sounds an I want the bass punch to remain , I tried the volume and dynamic and when it gets louder the bass and punch fades or gets distorted. Anyone have a solution? I heard from someone else that Cool Edit has a bass expander or maximizer or sonic bass max of some sort if thats true. Can any offer a suggetion? Thanks.
 
How about compressing them with a relatively short attack? It'll let the punch of the sound through, but it'll squash a lot of the rest of the sound (depending on your settings). Then you can turn the whole thing up without clipping. Bang, bang!
