Hey guys,

I just bought an AT2020, an ART TUBE MP preamp and as my budget is low, i got told an XLR to USB cable would work just fine to connect my preamp to my pc.

I connected the mic to the preamp, powered up the preamp and connected it to my pc, and it seems that even though the mic is detected by my pc, no sound is coming from it. The computer notices slight noise when pushing the amplification to the max on my preamp, but it seems to be just noise and i can't hear anything even then.

My pc is solid, updated and everything works fine so it doesn't seem like a software problem.

Any ideas to solve this ?

Thanks beforehand.

Yes, i pushed the button that enables it, and nothing changed.
Maybe there is an order to do it ?
As you can see i'm really a beginner so i actually have no idea if it changes anything.

I have tried using the windows function, the one on my headset that does the same, and mumble, and after selecting the device (called USB PnP Sound Device) it still hasn't worked.

The ART Tube MP isn't an audio interface, it's just a preamp. Connecting it to a USB port on your computer will do nothing, because there is nothing in the Tube MP that will do analog to digital conversion. You need an audio interface to do that conversion.

In the meantime, you can plug the Tube MP into your existing sound card's line input. You'll need to adapt the Tube MP's output (most likely 1/4") to your computer sound card's line input (most likely 3.5mm).

There are so many possible pitfalls here!

First of all, when OP plugs in the USB device Windows should find it and install drivers (same as a USB stick) Does it?
If so, it then needs to be found and will probably be call a "Microphone USB Device". That then needs to be set as default recording device.
Next check its level. Probably be set for 100% and that is far too high but leave it there for now. If perchance it is set for 0% it won't work at all.

But, how to hear it? He only has the system sound card and usually you cannot set a different input and output sound device in a DAW.

Last of all we don't know any details of the USB converter but the Art pre slams out a hefty level, it is surely going to overload a device that is likely a -10dBV "domestic" widget?

Dave.

Thanks for helping, everyone, i'm really grateful.

@arcaxis : Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming. (voip)

@ecc83 : Windows indeed detects and installs drivers, and the microphone is recognized but no sound is coming from it. I set its volume in Windows to 100% and moved around the amplification on the ART TUBE to try and hear something but all i get is noise (electric noise) if i push it to the max.
I don't have the details about the cable right now but i will post them this evening when i get back home.

I suspect the cheap XLR-USB "Converter" is the fault on this.

If it has XLR input it's probably more like -30dBu.

I actually have a 1/4" plug going into the ART MP.

When i speak into the mic the clip does not react. So i guess it has to do with either the cable between the mic and the preamp or my mic directly.

Oh :O
Well i guess am stupid then :D
I will go buy one now !
Thanks for the help guys, i'll keep you updated once i get it.

Update since i bought the XLR cable : everything works, i just had some trouble making the light clip on the preamp to find the right level on the sound but other than that it's very good ! thanks for the help once again, and have a good day ;)
