need help with aw16g sampler pads

Being the old dinosaur rock n roller (i.e. early Allmans, Skynyrd, etc) that I am, maybe my brain cells are too fried to grasp this part of the 16g. No problem with the rest, just those damn samples. What I'm basically doing is laying down a keyboard track (just chords for the sample to follow) then another keyboard track, some acoustic guitar tracks, lead tracks, followed with vocals. The problem is that after I lay down the initial track, and pull up the pad track that I want to use, the tempo gets all jacked around when I hit play to record the pad to the pad track. I know that this is probably a very simple fuck up on my part, but any help would certainly be appreciated by those of you out there that own the 16g. Having zippo experience in the DAW world doesn't help matters, but I wanted to start out with something decent, rather than upgrade down the road. Hopefully I'm not the only one out there having problems understanding the manual. I've poured through many manuals in my lifetime, but this one is a real mindfuck. I don't know if it will help, but make sure that the in the sample pad setup, you go down to the bottom and set it to the song tempo instead of the default pad tempo.

Just so you know, I'm just as much a newbie as you are with the 16G. Just got mine a couple weeks ago and it's my first multi-track recorder of any kind, as I just started playing guitar about four months ago. I'm setting up www.aw16g.com so that 16g owners, beginner and advanced, can help each other figure out this kind of stuff.

Good luck with the pads. I played around with some of the included drum beats when I first got it, and I remember having a couple problems similar to yours. I'm going to be messing around with the pads some more soon, so if I figure out the trick (although I'm pretty sure what juststartingout said will fix it) I'll let you know.

You may want to play around with trying to record the drum tracks first, too. I just got into using the pads and added drums to an existing song that I recorded earlier. Although I recorded the parts using the metronome, when I laid down the drum track withthe pads, the slight tempo inaccuracies in my playing were even more noticeable. It would probably be easier to play & record to the actual drum samples as opposed to just a click.
 
I was going to suggest that order as well APICO. Another thing to do is since you are using keyboards (I am assuming a synth) you can tie the clocks together with a midi cable and sync the clocks between the two.

The order I have been doing it in, is to use the sample pad to provide a consistant beat throughout the song, lay in the guitar, vocals and keyboards and then go back and remove the pad tracks and lay in the various drum tracks using the sequencer on the synth and the pads.

I have only had mine for a few weeks now. I just love it.
 
M-Head, I'm sure that JSO is right when mentioning that you need to set the pads to SONG TEMPO, rather than to their normal default. You might also make sure that you have looped pad samples actually set to LOOP, rather than one-shot trigger.

I've found the sampler to work well, once I got the hang of it--especially with the ability to load *single pad* samples from different sample *banks* (a little tricky at first, but effective when creating a drum track).

Sorry I can't give you page numbers (I don't have my manual at work with me), but do let us know if these suggestions don't do the trick.

Yo Jeffree; I guess you can teach a dinosaur new tricks after all. I sat up last night absolutely determined to figure it out, and I'll be damned--------I DID!!!!! Stupid error on my part (not uncommon). When I pulled up the sample from the library, the BPM read one thing, and the tempo map read another. So I scrolled over to the BPM in the tempo map and changed it to read the same thing as the library. The 16g is a killer machine!!!! Just takes alot of trial and error, but sometimes that's the best way. Thanks guys for all your input. I'm looking forward to the 16g forum that Dinsdale is setting up. Yo, JSO; You were absolutely right. The tempo of the pattern I was playing on keys matched the sample in the library, but when I scrolled to the tempo map, the BPM was set at 110 instead of the 60 BPM that the library showed. Using the jog to change it was the ticket, and all was fine in la la land. Some of the simplest things are sometimes the most difficult. Happy recording to all, and to all a good night! MH
