I could really use some help or advice in regards to configuring my E-Mu 1212m to record and multitrack. I've been having extreme difficulty with the Patchmix DSP. I've spent almost a week in front of my computer clicking buttons in a dazed state, unable to record, and am now going somewhat crazy, I think.
I have been recording for years on a Creative Live Drive interface and Cool Edit Pro, so I wouldn't normally consider myself a newbie, but I certainly feel like one now.
I'm pretty sure my problem is an absolute lack of knowledge about how the Patchmix DSP works. I don't even honestly know what SPDIF or ASIO are acronyms for, or how to configure anything regarding them. There's a very cryptic and not-very-helpful tutorial that came with the 1212m, which hasn't helped. And all the sites I've visited for more information begin on the working assumption that the user understands way more than I guess I do.
I have a new computer running Vista, with 4GB RAM and 500 GB hard drive space. I have the 1212m installed exactly as it says to, and have even managed to record a few tracks off of it (but with less than stellar results). I know C.E.P. pretty well, and have adjusted buffers, latencies, and have tried an external drive for a Temp folder and a partitioned drive as well. But nothing is working. I also tried recording in Sonar LE and Ableton w/out any results. And I also downloaded all the Vista patches, after unsuccessfully trying to run in XP compatibility.
I'm not using MIDI for anything. I'm relying on the stereo analog ins entirely. Here's what happens when I try to record:
SOMETIMES the first track actually records, and sounds good. Sometimes there's simply no sound recorded whatsoever. The monitor in C.E.P. will sometimes reflect the sound coming in, sometimes not.
Invariably, the second track either does not record, or sounds extremely choppy on playback, with lots of ugly clicks, like an absolutely psychotic tremolo. Further recordings degrade even worse, until around Track 5 or 6 it's just a shuddery mess.
If I put old multitrack sessions in the program, they play back fine. I can do mixdowns perfectly fine. It appears that the problem is between the inputs and the actual recording. hence, my suspicion it's the Patchmix, and my inability to comprehend it.
I wrote E-Mu about this, begging for help. They have not responded for several days and I'm really considering taking the Emu back to the store for a refund because I may be too stupid to use the Patchmix. I've never been so frustrated with a music program in my life.
I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could explain, step by step perhaps, how to configure the Patchmix DSP to multitrack in C.E.P. 2.1 (or Sonar LE) and how everything needs to be set.
Thanks,
Jess
