Howdy, all. I'm putting together a press kit for labels, management, etc. and am wondering -- is it good to compare your band to currently successful acts?

I've heard both sides of this argument. Yes, it's good because it lets the listener place you in a successful market and get a better grasp on you and your sound. And no, you want to present an image of complete originality -- an untapped sound with unlimited potential, that can't be interpreted as a rip-off of someone else.

So what's the final verdict? Let me know your thoughts...

Get on the web and d/l some actual press kits from bands/artists in your genre. That will give you an idea.

Hey........30sos......
.....First of all, as Ive mentioned in the clinic, I dig your stuff, and I understand the comparisons that you speak of. Its a tuff question to answer too. I played the Hollywood circuit for 10 yrs or so, and comparison there was both good and bad, as im sure it is everywhere. In that environment, there were so many bands,"everyone" was compared to someone just for the sake of easy reference. The last band i played w/ for example was compared to Janes add. True, this gives you a category for people who arent familiar with you to lump you into, but it also sets up a direct comparison to that artist. If, for example, you compare yourself to ......say the chilli peppers, you had better have the chops that they have plus an original twist or you just appear as a clone act trying to ride someone elses breakthrough. I like your material, and i believe i may even have mentioned who it reminds me of. I hear great songs and musicianship, but by quoting a comparison in your P. kit, you maybe "timing" yourself to something that is just a touch outdated. If i were you, I wouldnt get so specific as to mention bands, but rather just style. Describe your own personal genre as best you can without naming bands. You want to be regarded as the next "thing".... so dont be afraid to use original verbage and description. Sometimes things that they dont understand will promote curiosity. Good luck, and as i mentioned, let me know when youre clubbin in south cali.......:D g
