Need help with a computer skipping problems.

Here's some background on my problem,

First config (old)
Machine: P4/256meg RAM
Windows 98
60gig O/S drive
13gig data drive
software is Cool edit pro.
Problem: Cool edit pro crashes.

Second config (New and current)
Machine: P4/256meg RAM
Windows 2000
13gig/7200rpm O/S drive
30gig partition with FAT32
30gig partition with FAT32
Software cool edit pro.
Problem: While recording one track and playing back the other
the recorded track skips.


The first config didn't have any problem with skips it only had a problem with cool edit pro crashing. How do I solve this problem without going back to Windows 98? How do I get rid of the skips?
 
A few things that may help you find the problem.

Does your soundcard have stable drivers for 2000 (and do you use them)?

Do you have DMA enabled for the HDDs?

Does Cool edit pro have compatibilitity issues with 2000?

Ola,

The Hard drives are set at UDMA 5 and UDMA 2.

I'm using the Win 2000 drivers for the LYNX card. They
say the drvers are the same as the NT drivers. They say it's
a stable driver with no known problems.

I will try another program and see what happens.

The setup is brand new. I just loaded 2000 and cool edit pro.
I would have to have data on the drives to need defrag.
I did do a scandisk to look for bad sectors. The drives are new
and without any bad sectors.

There is a MW DMA and a UDMA setting in the RAID setup. Should the hard drives be in MW DMA mode instead of UDMA mode?

I'm thinking you were right about the cool edit pro. Let me try Vegas pro and I will get back with you.

Yeah, I would suggest the same things...

1) Verify buffer settings in cool edit. I'm willing to bet that the lynx doesn't have any low latency drivers that will work on Windows 2000 (e.g. ASIO, WDM), so you're going to need a buffer size eqivalent to at least 1/2 a second.
2) Update soundcard drivers. Perhaps even get ahold of a set of older drivers and try em out.
3) Try different software. Download n-Track or something.
4) Update various other component drivers, including chipset drivers
5) Enable DMA on hard drives. Do a search for "dskbench" and download it. Run dskbench on your audio drive and ensure that you're seeing *at least* 18-20MB/sec read & write
6) Check your IRQ settings. If you configured Windows 2000 for ACPI, then RME's FAQ states that it could be a problem, since all of your devices will appear to be on IRQ9 (I haven't verified that it is an actual problem, but I have verified that all devices *appear* to be on 9). In this case configure your machine as a "Standard PC", in which case you'll be able to take a look at your IRQ settings. IRQ sharing could be an issue, and changing IRQ's will require that you move hardware around, if you're prepared for that.

I think SM2k was correct. I tried Vegas pro and it works.

It must be a buffer setting in cool edit pro.

Later I will experiment with cool edit and see what settings will work with Windows 2000.
