I need to know where the "monitor select line out" switch should be when recording.

The manual says it should be in "L - R" when recording, and then a few pages later it says to select "mono" when recording.

I assume this means you are either recording in stereo via " L - R", or mono if in "mono" position.

I also assume we should record in "mono"

Help!!!!!

The Monitor/Line-Out switch:

Controls whether the LINE OUT stereo mix will be output to the monitor mix in stereo (L-R), in mono (MONO) or not at all (OFF).
...

The main use of this switch would be when you're overdubbing, and/or using any channel in the hard-panned (L or R) position,... in which case switching to MONO centers the hard-panned signal to the center. It's basically a listening convenience to hear your hard-panned input signals panned to center. You don't necessarily want to listen in the phones to the TAPE CUE mix (which is mono), and your live-input channel all the way in one ear or another. Hard-panning is part of a technique to route and direct the input signals to individual tracks, but depending on how many inputs and tracks you're using simultaneously,... hard panning isn't always necessary, and the PAN control may often be left in the center position. A lot of the intent of the MONITOR/LINE OUT switch is a convenience item to streamline the recording/overdubbing process,... as far as hearing your overdub input signal in both ears instead of one. That's what the MONITOR/LINE OUT switch is aimed toward.;)

And bear in mind that the setting has no effect upon the recording signal itself. If you're recording to one track, it's mono; two tracks can be in stereo. Even if you turn it to the off position, the recording will be unaffected. Like recording to your VCR with the tv off.

Good point.

The Cue and Monitor mix do not affect the Main-buss mix, which feeds signal to the tracks.
