Need help starting out with Echo Layla

I'm brand new to digital recording and I'm trying to set up a little home recording station using an echo layla. I've got the card installed, and the baisc software which they include with it (Cool-Edit Pro) but I can't even get as much as a signal to show up. I'm running a drum machine into a small console, and the console into the Layla. I've tried bypassing the console but that didn't do anything. The system says Layla is working properly, but I sure can't tell. What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated!
 
You should be able to go into your Windows control panel, select sounds/audio. and make sure that the Layla is set as default . You should find it under the Audio Tab of this option.

Then go back and see if you get a signal in CEP
 
Make sure the Layla mixing console is set up right first. Then check on your playback and record options in Cool edit. You have 3 buttons on each track. Mute-Play-rec
Click both the play and rec buttons to route it.
If your input is #1 on the layla then make sure that the playback (output) on cool edit is set to "layla 1 and the same for the record track.
Of course you can playback on any channel that you want.
With Cool edit youll see a signal when you record. If you dont see one its not recording.
Are you using the new Beta drivers for Win Xp?

No, I'm not using beta XP drivers. I am using the last update for Windows ME. I am starting to think that the problem exists within the Layla. I have sound going in, and not coming out. The Layla Mixer is set up properly, but no signal is making it in. I bought this used off the net, so maybe I got hosed (I hope not). Also the cable to connect the Layla to the PCI card ISN'T the original. Should I order up a new one from Echo?

Is the cable made for the Layla?
I would check all your inputs and outputs using Left,right and stereo one at a time. The easiest way to do this is to plug straight into the layla with your Vocal mike if its 1/4 ". Its Highly unlikely that all of them are bad. Use the layla console first to view the signal. If you get it there, then you know you have an input working.
If you get nothing on any of them it could be in the software settings, the cable, the card itself or the unit.
Just make double sure of your Layla console settings. Make sure they are not set to mute and the faders up. Also take the Gang feature off. Let me Know if this helps.:cool:
 
I have to wonder about this cable you are using? If you are not getting signal to the layla console I would be suspisious of it.
Where did you get this cable? EDIT: (ahhhh ebay)

Is the layla console icon at the bottom right of your desktop? It should be, you can click on it and check for signal to the computer.


What does the cable you have look like? Color, ect.......
 
I have the Layla 24 as well. Have you tried throwing on a pair of headphones directly to the layla?? If you are getting sound i'd have to say it is the cable.

Why didn't you get the original cable??
Also if you are using Cool edit pro make sure to set up the card under the options/ device settings.

I don't know about that. On mine you have to use the console to set up monitoring of inputs with the headphones. Mine came with out that being set as default, so I can run signal in without hearing a thing out of the headphones.
