Hi, I am interested in starting a home studio. I have a pentium II Celeron PC with 300MHz. I am going to upgrade my hardrive from 4GB. My soundcard is factory and I'm not sure what it is called; however, the driver it uses is a yamaho oplx or something like that. I have a mediocre guitar a marshall practice amp and a yamaha psr-240 midi keyboard with cables. I also have a very old version of cubasis 1.13 and have tampered with it a little. I have read through this site three times and finally developed the nerve to give music a serious try. I have been playing guitar for over 15 years off and on. Unfortunately I can't play piano as well as the guitar, but I was hoping there were ways to get around this until I become better. I will be moving to where this studio will be set up temporarily. The room will be comfortable for two guitarists but that's it. I don't have a band and I'm not yet interested in forming one, so if anyone can help with my solo venture, please respond.
Thanks

Welcome to our site and to your new interest in recording music!

If you haven't already, you probably want to first give thought to what kind of music you want to record. That decision will point you towards what kind of musical equipment that will best suit your goals. You are already at an advantage by working with your pc in that there is a ton of freeware out there, from drum loops to wave editing that will provide both help and inspiration.

To get your feet wet, I suggest you check out the search feature on this bbs. Searching for good books on recording would be a good place to start.

Also, as soon as you get up and running, dive right in and start recording stuff, because trial and error is the best way to learn and know what questions to ask about this extensive and expensive hobby.

Best of luck,

Cy

Band in a box has been used by some of the people who have had me polish up thier stuff. It works ok.

First I'll say thanks for the replies and the welcome. I have set up my studio temporarily and I haven't got my guitar hooked up. Is there any specific way to hook it up. I also am having a hard time playing the piano over the cubasis beat. The delay on the keyboard is unbelievable. I'm not sure how you correct this. I also want to tamper with this little computer mike that I have. I have it in the mic input and I can't get any response from cubasis. It only works on WINDOZE sound recorder. Can anyone help me.
Thanks

Digital Or Analog?

With the equip I have should go digital or analog? It just seems like it's easier to record analog than digital. I'm going to have to get some equip anyway, so I'm not sure which way to go.

?? You can only record digitally on a PC. You need an analog tape recorder to record analog audio.

First you should start with getting a good burner for the computer. 100.00 will buy a good one nowdays. a decent editing program like sound forge, and then a good sound card like the M audio audiophile.

then get a good reel to reel system. Depending on where you live a half inch used 16 track machine will be sold at near throw away prices. If you are lucky you may find a digital 8 track for arround 300.00 I prefer the dig 8 track because of the low noise and you can bounce the tracks to get 16 and its still cleaner than analog.

You want to use the computer for master only because face it if you use any software for multitracking you will have even more latency issues, and the blue screen of death will be a regular occourance. But for editing two tracks there isnt any issues that a 300mhz machine couldnt handle. Right now RAM is cheap I have 512Mb in my machine and I spent only 100.00, the 30gb hds are arround 70.00, so I would get one too. Keep the present hard drive in your machine and go with two.

Thanks for the responses so soon. I have an Hp 4x4 cd-r drive. I just want to make sure I understand what I need: a digital 8 track recorder (to store muic), a new mic (no brainer), and one of the multitrack software editors(preferably with notation),
but what about guitar plug-ins? Should I use the mic. How do I create backup parts on the 8-track if I'm the only musician(buy Band-In-A_Box)? Is there any other way to create original back-up music with-out the band-In-a-box?
Thanks Again

You can do what I do and play all of the instruments. The 8 track digital machine will be for all of the tracking and mixdown and the mixed stuff will be stored on your computer. for a 300mhz machine Plugins will be a problem, Id get a sansanp or a pod or something.
