Need Help: "Recording in a Stairway"?

I have this real kinda dump of an one-room apartment....but the Hallway/Stairway!!! WOW !!!

So, I would like to get the full sound of it on tape...how do i go about?

I have a Shure KSM-44 with omni and figure 8 and cardiod pattern. Which pattern is best?

And also, should i place a second mic in the bottom of the stairs, and mix it with the signal of the "Main-Mic"?

I'd use the same mic, just back it off from the source until you get a good balance between the direct sound and the reverb. Start with the Omni. Try the mic at the bottom of the stairs too, can't hurt.
