need help please

I am a bit new to recording on my computer..
I have all the stuff to do it with but lack the direction.

heres my Q:

I have several options for sound: amp, or a few different fx processors.
I have recorded before on the computer but cant for the life of me remember how i had it all hooked up.

so what do i need to do?
can i go from the guitar to the processor to the sound card or do i need an external amp to pwer the processor?

can i go out from the amp into the computer? sounds dangerous...

do i need to use my board to interface the guitar to the computer..

etc..

hope someone can help me out.

I just downloaded free pro tools and really want to get started with my music.

Do you use external mixer board ? what mic ? what quality do you expect ? There's million ways to record, just be specific... :D We'll help.

I generally dont like to use the board as its an old Sunn but it works well..
nor do i ever use a mic...

I prefer to go as simple as i can with the best quality.
I have a great computer too.

from what i remember from the few times i recorded in the computer, i did use the board and the fx... cant remember if the i had a power amp to the board.. i must have though, i also remember recording from my guitar head too..

i cant remember exactly what went out from the board to the computer and if i needed a power amp to run the board and if so so i go out from the amp to the computer or the board etc..

I know im sounding like a lame brain but its really confusing for me.

I remember it took me like a week and some SERIOUS frustration to figure it all out before.
I tried to figure it out again but had no luck. never got a signal to the computer even the thought cable going in was hot..
I thought it was my sound card but i took the computer in last week to check on another thing and had them check the card as well and they said its 100%

You should be able to go Guitar- Processor- Soundcard LINE Input. Make sure the Line in is turned up in the windows mixer (double click the speaker icon) and that your are not using the mic in.

Never ever plug the outputs of a power amp into anything but a speaker or you will damage your gear.
