Can't seem to get a good mix and style and need some
direction or comments on what I've got so far.
This is just a preliminary mix so there's no chorus or major instruments added yet.
Any help or opinions welcome.

Well it is a little hard to comment on a partial mix, but the thing that jumped out at me initially was the drums - they're drier and closer to the front than anything else in the mix. Working on the placement of the drums in the overall mix would be where I'd start with this one. I like the vibe you're going for with this one though. Hope you'll keep us posted.

pretty cool.. I really like the way this song starts.. It's tough to talk about the mix without hearing what else is being added.. I can say that the high hat seems too loud, but it might be good once other instruments are added.. The vocals seem very compressed.. It's off to a good start though.. cool song..

OK kewl.... I appreciate the help.

I've remixed it slightly and added a background chorus harmony now.... The drums I brought down a bit but they're a sampled drum loop so the only way to bring down individual parts is to either totally re-do it by hand (something I"m seriously considering) or EQ the heck out of it.

I guess what I'm mainly wondering about is if this is a listenable song. Does it do anything for ya (keeping in mind there'll be an acoustic guitar solo at the end and a pink floyd lead to fade out the song... as well as some little additional instruments on the extreme left and right pan to just add interest.....
Guess what I'm looking for is opinions from anybody about the vocals too (cause I'm not a vocalist and this is one of my first tries.... by first one was Goin Home
and people kept telling me I sounded like a 45 year old pervert or something.

I'm still trying to find a style I can work with that lets me not only use my vocals but add the advance guitar licks I post at GuitarTricks ( http://www.schmange.com)

I'd welcome any comments, compliments or just plain 'you suck' comments from anybody.

Thanks for taking the time.

Sounds great. It needs more instruments like leads to wards the end but I assume that's what you're going to do. Hope you post it again when it's finished.

Hey Schmange:

You know, the problem of trying to make synthetic drums sit right in a mix is one I'm constantly grappling with & one thing that's helped me a lot lately is the use of a spacial simulator (I use Cakewalk's FX3 Soundstage). It helps place the drums back a bit in the mix, but without the muddyness that a lot of reverb can add (which is another way of getting the drums out of your face, so to speak).

The thing is, in most tunes that feature real drums, the drums aren't anywhere near as pristine and up front as most drum loops/samples, etc. For awhile I was building virtual echo chambers for the drums, but FX3 really blows my mind.

There's a good review over at:

Just a thought (no, I don't work for them:))

I kinda like the looped drums. Real ones would take away the feel of the song.
When are you adding the guitar solos :)
I know your stuff from guitar tricks so I'm looking forward to hearing em.

I've redone the mix a bit and EQ'd the drums slightly to take off the top end. I also left the compression off the vocals this time.

Still trying to decide whether to replace the drums with real ones tho.... when I first started the song with only drums/bass/guitar, it gave a nice feel to the song... now with all the extra instruments I'm wondering if they're too overwhelming for the song.

Anyways... still haven't added the guitar solos yet but would like to get some more feedback from anybody interested before I go on with it.
