I am using Cool Edit Pro and am only getting sound out of my speakers after I record (on playback), but no sound comes out while I am recording (except the previously recorded track). Are there any Pro's out there that could point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What's full duplex? I am using my onboard soundcard, which I'm sure is a POS. If the sound comes out after I record why can't I get sound while I'm playing?

Full duplex means the soundcard can record and playback *simultaneously*. If the card isn't full duplex, then you'll be able to record whatever you like, but you won't be able to hear it while you're recording. But you'll be able to hear it all in playback. Which is why Track Rat asked about whether your soundcard is full duplex - that scenario matches your problem exactly.

Thanks for helping me with my problem, Track Rat and dobro. As you both can probably tell, I really have no idea what I'm doing; I'm just kinda fumbling my way through the whole thing. What is the cheapest soundcard that I could get away with right now? I am just recording guitar, bass and drums, so would something like a SoundBlaster Live work?

dude. look for something pro like the echo mia. I got mine for $99 and it works perfect. sblive will work but when you start getting serious it doesnt pull through. Its got hiss and converts everything 46khz which is messed up.

If he can record a track while listening to another track - he has a full duplex card.

It really seems like he wants to monitor the track he is recording...

I have the same problem as stratboy except i cant hear myself as i record but i can hear the music! Just not the myself! Help! :(
