Village Idiot

The Love Butler
Just purchased the Audiophle 2496 card, installed it.

Problem now is...I have no idea which settings to initialize.

I am running N-track with it, 24-bit capabilites on my N-Track.
What do I set it for?

24-Bit, 24 bit unpacked, or 24 bit left justified?

And many drivers to choose from on the CD. Do I only choose the Delta folder? I am running Windows 98 (Not SE)

And given the fact that it has RCA phono female plugs, what is the best way to hook this up to my Bass, let's say...
Do I run a male RCA plug, then put a 1/4 inch adapter on the end of that?

I am getting woooozzzy...

:D

1st and formost, you should upgrade to Win98se.

but assuming you'll do that...

Install should pick the correct drivers for your OS. If it doesn't, you might check out the M-audio web site for details.

Did you buy this used? Otherwise, the manual would be the first place I'd look...

Your software *should* allow you to control the Audiophile's bit rate. So set your recording software to record at 24bits. Then change the properties on the card if you NEED to.

You can't record your bass without a pre-amp.

If you have a mixer like the Mackie 1202, you could plug the RCA in and outputs of the Audiophile into the TAPE I/O on the Mackie but without a pre-amp, you'll never get enough level to record.

What about a direct box? There are several offerings. Bass POD comes to mind....

Thanks For The Reply...

It was purchased new.

The manual says that if it is installed correctly, the M Audio icon would appear on my taskbar (It doesn't).

Can I/Should I disable my other pre-installed crappy soundcard?

And do I want to set my preferences to ASIO drivers?

I am just really ignorant at these kind of things.

Thanks for any help!

Check in CONTROL PANEL. Do you see the M-Audio icon there?

Check under SYSTEM/DEVICE MANAGER and see if the Audiophile shows up there. If there are red Xs or yellow exclamation marks, you may need to re-install.

BE SURE TO REMOVE THE OLD DRIVERS FIRST - go to M-Audio's web site and grab their uninstall utility.

If your other sound card is built on the motherboard (it sounds as if it might be) then you may not be able to "disable" it completely.

Try and reboot into your systems' BIOS to check if sound can be disabled or not.

If its just a PCI card, remove the drivers, then yank the card out.

What card is it? Some people like to use SB cards next to their Audiophile cards to use the Synth engine for SoundFonts on the SB card... Worth considering.

Not sure about the ASIO driver part... now I have to go get MY manual out...

ok... Page 11 of the manual deals with ASIO.

Basically, you *might* have to choose ASIO from the M-AUDIO control Panel. (found inside Windows CONTROL PANEL)

Put a shortcut to the M-Audio Control Panel on your desktop to make life easy.

I don't see anything that says there should be an icon in the TASK BAR and besides, you don't want it there anyway. The fewer things in your task bar, the better!!

Its not hard to set up and your software may automatically configure itself. Just double check your settings, get familiar with them and all should go well.

Happy recording!

Zombie King!!!

You are a wise man...

Here's what I have in response to your comments.

I see the M AUDIO like I should in the Control Panel.

AudioPhile shows up under System/Device Manager

Not sure if the old soundcard is on the motherboard or not.
I will check my manual on that issue.

The old soundcard is a ESS Solo, basic generic card, I assume.

I'll do everything else you mentioned, and let you know the outcome.

Thanks again for your help!
