I have been recording with a Fostex MR-8 with a Behringer Mixer, and recently I have noticed a lot of noise in the recordings. The noise is high frequency that sounds somewhat like having mics hooked up to an amp right before you get feedback. I have been using Audicity to mix the tracks on a computer. Is there any way to remove or "quiet" the noise?
Thanks so much,
Jack

noise

I think Audacity has noise reduction and removal. You have to highlight a sample of it on the waveform to tell the software what noise to remove. I have used it but only on voice not on music. I thought it did a decent job but it did change the dynamics some.

In the program, highlight the waveform where the noise is. click on effect in the command line. go to noise removal and click, click the "get noise profile" button on the pop up. you can do a preview and use the slider to remove less or more. then when you have what you want, click remove noise.

As I said, I've never used this filter on music so good luck.

Noise reduction would work, but I would try to find out where the noise is coming from. Make sure you aren't feeding the output back into the input.

Make sure your patch cables aren't two long if you're running mics thru some type of pre-amp going into the MR-8. Ernie Ball makes some foot long 1/4" TS to 1/4" TS cables that are perfect for short patches like running from a mic pre to an MR-8 [or in my case, the VF80].

Please Elaborate

How could the output be fed back? I only use headphones. Could that be a source of the problem? Also I have a long mic cable and only need a few feet
at most. Could that be a part of it all? I appreciate the help.

It could be headphone bleed, but you probably would have figured that out. I was thinking more along the lines of a feedback loop happening software-wise.

Fairview Question

You obviously know much more about this than I do. How do I correct the problem ?
